Scottish bruiser 2013

Hi, guys - thought you might like to see an early 2013 Gold medal Roe buck. Not officially scored, but dried weighed 696grams. Eight points - plus one broken off. A real Scottish bruiser, re-caped for the customer. ATB Bill.

What a waste !
Why was it not officially scored ?
Killing it and not bothering to get it officially scored shows gross lack of respect to a fine beast.

I don't think that is a fair comment. The hunter is showing a fine beast respect by spending several hundred pounds so that it can hang on his wall. Medals mean more to some than others. He shot it, it's his choice.

Possibly but it is disrespectful to hang it on a wall wearing another beasts skin measured or not !

Because you dont get a head officially scored its showing a gross lack of respect to the beast??This place is the gift that keeps giving at times.

Bill you must mean 2012 as the 2013 heads haven't had the 90 days drying out time to get weighed and scored yet plus you would have been a bit quick with the taxidermy

Unless of course the venison has been enjoyed - for lots of stalkers it is the production of venison that matters, a 'nice head' is just a by-product.

Never had a head measured in my life, actually shooting a deer because it has a nice head shows no respect at all.

Bill, your post doesnt add up. You say its a gold but it has not been measured. It most probably is gold but its not official unless its been measured. If it was shot at the beginning of this season then did you have to colour them? In my experiance, even mature bucks at the beginning of the season, although some are out of velvet, they are normally still white, at least at the bases. Still a cracking taxidermy job mind.

Hi, PIP - many thanks for your response. Just to clarify things, this buck was shot in Forres on the 3rd of April. Dreadful coat, and the chap has no interest in medals, he just wanted to preserve what he considered a fabulous animal. He paid premium rate for fast turnaround and a replacement cape. Not officially scored as you say, but I have mounted and assessed many such heads for customers over the years and generally not far out. It was forced dried, and I have allowed a generous amount for possible errors. Antlers have not been coloured at all, we quite often get colour on them quite early up here. You can have antlers assessed by BASC right away, without the 90 days wait by others. Bill.

Correct and one of the reasons why BASC measurements are not accepted by the CIC .
In my opinion any outstanding specimen should be measured and recorded for that countries records.

Hi Bill
Although I can appreciate the quality of the head, it's not the prettiest of heads, but each to his own. You'll know where I'm coming from, from our recient conversations. Don't get me wrong I'd love to have it hanging on my wall though.
I would say that anyone who is willing to spend several hundred pounds having it presurved for years to come has the greatest of respect for the buck.
Congrats on anther great job well done.
Paul
