csl, very good idea and i would like to sign up to this to help anybody local to me, just one or two points that concearn me, that i think have been brought up already, how does the person who is asking for help know how good or not the dog is going to be, or the person with the dog ?

1. you could have really good dog that was with someone who is not a stalker, they may not have a clue what to look for at the shot site or the dogs reactions when one the trail.

2. someone who is experenced and there dog is not fully trained yet (if at all )

maybe there is some need for some sort of testing, man and dog ( even if it means just following a simple trail )

To be honest with you ,any stalker who has cocked up would not be too concerned if the dog and handler had super dooper sniffing powers and had qualifications as long as pinochios or 6 pointers stories:D (sorry David could not resist)
All he would be interested in is some help any help novice ,trained or otherwise as soon as possible if the dog in the area had those qualifications of super dooper sniffing and tracking then its a bonus for the stalker.
Me personally would just appreciate help any bleeding help and thats the basis of whats been proposed here.

Thanks
Stu

The lab on the right is my 'every job' dog, she does the lot, picks up, dogs in, peg dog, deer trained and proven. The 16 week old lunatic in the middle (GWP) is under training, the cocker is gun shy! and the left hand lab is just starting to come good. I'm based in lancs but get about quite a bit (Scotland, Devon, wherever)

in edit: I work shifts so can be available at odd times.

I would be keen to register to help, I have a 2 yr old Gwp that I have been training and I would be glad of the experience for both myself and the dog.

Just seen this and think it's a great idea, count me in. Although my profile says Somerset I am very near parts of Wiltshire and Dorset.

my dog is sure not the best deer dog there is but as yet she has not let me down , if people dont wish to use my amateur trained dog they are more than welcome to continue on there own or look for a better trained dog , i or my dog will not be offended , it is just a genuine offer to anybody who want s help

And this is where the problem often starts

no offence to you 65x55
but untill you hav been in a position where you hav had to put the dog aside and track a beast yourself you will realise what cookingfat is on about
your offer of help is very generous and should be applauded like everyone elses ,
but just like any other proffession would you let a novice builder build an extension on your house for you or a novice mechanic strip your car engine if it had a knocking noise
these are simple things to do with loads of books showing you how to
just like working a dog
I would prefer to hav some girl or guy with a proven ability turn up and look
knowing exactly what they are looking at and signs to look for , even which deer to track first just incase you hav multiple deer to find, than some person with a dog that has found a few deer look for 20 mins and give up saying it has run this far so it must only of been a graze or it's getting late and I don't hav a torch, even the dog has lost interest now so there is nothing else I can do ..sorry.......etc.etc
only for you to turn up in the wood a week later to find the said beast dead 150 yards from the place it was initialy shot or a phonecall from your neighbour or landowner asking if you hav lost a deer as they hav found one dead
no insult to anyone that has a novice dog and are not really upto the job in hand but are offering help
sometimes just having a dog is not enough and all to often we rely to much on the dog
you need experience aswell so if the dog goes of track or has a bad day , cos they do,
you can still read the signs and carry on tracking regardless

I think the point is that for someone with no deer dog any help whatsoever, however amateurish is better than that person could achieve on their own. The trouble is that deer dogs are not as readily available as plumbers or builders and the timeframe available to someone who has lost a deer is short therefore unless they are lucky enough to know someone with a proven dog then the help available from any volunteer is better than nothing at all.

adding to the above, if you are out on your own another persons perspective might help two sets of eyes are better than one + a nose attached to a dog, any dog has to be better than none?

myself and another member have just used this facitlty to swap info and to my mind it works just fine

we have both asked that our details be kept priviate and not given out without prior consent

he now has a contact for a local dog/dogs

JOBS A GOOD UN :-D

Can you come out and find my Deer i am only 20 mins away.Yes no problem and there lies the problem! empty house for 40 mins and you come back to an insurance claim. Any idea who might have done this asks the officer. 22.250DEER SLAMER SIR. Synical me i dont think so .;)

God what’s every ones problem? So some people might not have fully fledged deer dogs, some might be working on theirs. As long as they are up front about their dogs ability and the person seeking help is happy what does it matter?

As for giving away peoples details and address's, why does any one need to know your address rather than just general location and mobile number which could be gained through a PM? My old car is for sale on ebay just now, with the advert is my post code, mobile number, house number and first name. Like many people who advertise on such sites will note, these details have not resulted in
burglaries (I'm sure it happens occasionally though!).

I think this register is a brilliant idea, if you don't like it don't use it, simple.

My dog and I are not professionals, we are amateurs at best, but we have experience, we can find deer and we are willing to help people out in our area for free should they find themselves out on a limb. That is what I perceive this register to be, not an advertising board for professional deer dogs which come with a charge, just people helping each other out if they need/want it.

Maybe in the additional notes bit we could write a small description of our dogs abilites?

I can understand your concern David especially as you claim items of value go missing easily up your way,

I think the best think to do if you do intend to participate is make an inventory of everything you have in the house or elsewhere.

How on earth have we got onto burgling houses? :cuckoo:

Here is how it works:

  • You are going to be stalking without a dog or you are stalking in an area where you won't have access to a dog
  • You get onto the SD and you search for members who have dogs available in the applicable area
  • You make contact with them via the SD
  • You arrange to phone/talk/meet somewhere
  • You swap whatever details you are both comfortable with (realistically this only needs to be mobile phone numbers)

It's the same when you meet ANYONE for ANYTHING. Common sense. Why on earth should the fact that you are contacting someone with a view to using their dog's services in the future attract a higher risk of having your home burgled???

You won't use the service 6pointer, it's not for you - yes, thanks, we get it!

God what’s every ones problem?

No, it's only a vocal few who appear to be intent on trying to make it not work!

It's a good initiative that has the security issues addressed and used wisely could take off.

I'll echo Alex's comment - if it's something that doesn't interest you just pass on by and leave it for those with more faith in their fellow man.

Well I have made contact already and exchanged contact information with 2 willing participants in the area i stalk so i now have a double chance of obtaining a dog in the unlikely chance of one not being available should a possible lost deer event occur.
I am gratefull to both parties concerned and the contact information given to me will remain secure with me
Many thanks chaps appreciated lets hope I dont need you, in the kindest possible way.

Many thanks
Stu
