SD Deer Dog Register?

Is it possible to a have a map with the regions that are coverd highlighted in Light blue. So we know what areas are left to cover

I've picked this up from another thread (Runners!!!!!!) and thought it deserved discussion in its own right.

By way of an example of how this *might* work I have added some extra profile fields which you can fill in on your profile here:

Edit Profile

It is then displayed on your profile page that you have a dog available and how far you are willing to range. I've added a postcode field which is visible only to yourself as in the future it should be possible to add functionality to calculate distances.

You can also search the member list to find those members who have dogs available.

Search Memberlist (Just choose Deer Dog: yes and click Search)

Before going too far down this road it would be very useful to know if the fields I've added are the right fields, whether they are useful and whether any more are required before we get people to start filling it all in.

Once the bare bones are there (the data) we can build on it with searching, distances etc.

Alex

CSL,

Just a thought but couldn't you do the same but for AW's?

If your interested, put your name in,once enough people have their name in then you can look at maps,I for one don't want my specific location broadcast to all and sundry, being the only person up here just now
Grampian is a large region
CheersATB
AW too

same here (for the location bit)

There is the possibility of recording a mobile number for willing participants which remains private and the site could text them. That would be for the future though as it isn't a simple 10 minute setup!
Most people have smart phones with email notification. I know straight away if I get a PM, by the email notification, whether I am online or not.

No reason why not I guess! The only difference is that there is already a contact list available for candidates from DMQ but I suppose having some sort of marker on here might help....

See what your saying about getting shafted,I have been as well
We will watch this space with interest and see how it works out
I won't lose sleep over this as you say,all my dogs(3of them) get plenty of work from friends, myself and local people whom know me
I registered because it's a good idea to help others and I'll maybe get people spoken into getting a dog for themselves, also a good way to bring on younger dogs too,CSI has said this may take a bit of working,I for one will be interested whether you 6P are or not

Would be more than happy to help out on this if needed (new dog not quite ready yet) but will still turn out if needed.

I've removed some of the earlier posts, it wasn't adding to this and it's important we keep this on track until we at least have the data fields nailed down. We've got 13 members signed up already without even promoting anything and they are going to be miffed if we have to change things and they have to go and re-edit their details!

Alex how will this work if i have lost a deer at 5 am in the morning in june and want to contact a chap near to me. Now this chap will need to come to my farm and park at the farm . He would get asked who he is and he answers i cant tell you or i am Wolverine not from the tv but from the Internet. .My feeling is only real people should be allowed on to the register. As I said, we need to think about the 'real time' aspect of this some more. Until then all we are providing is a way for people to find other people in their area in advance and then you can vet them in your own way.... however it is you do that up there ;)

I would suggest, given that you don't trust anyone you've never met or have known for a while, that the 'instant message' part of this will not work for you.

Then at the opposite end of the spectrum someone who is willing to take someone else's word over the phone could benefit from immediate assistance.

It's degrees of trust vs risk.

p.s. I'm deleting anything that isn't directly helping the thread

Alex how can you trust some one that says i dont want anyone to know were i am from or i am pulling my help from the page . But he expects others to trust him . Sorry mate but in the real world i do trust some people but i know who they are and can trace them back to there home should they back stab me . Who will put a £40 deer against a chap who might steel there sport because he cannot be traced. If it comes down to trust then why dont i 6pointer from ................ Baby sit your gun cabinet.;) Delete what you like who really cares any more.

Your posts that were deleted were basically just disruptive and not helping in the least. Something that appears to be happening more regularly actually.

Regarding trust, well we can't do that for you. All I've done is run with a suggestion to provide a means for people to publicise the fact that they have a dog available IF you need it, IF you talk to them and are ok with their terms and IF you satisfy yourself you trust them. Those IF's are up to the people involved to sort out between themselves.

csl, very good idea and i would like to sign up to this to help anybody local to me, just one or two points that concearn me, that i think have been brought up already, how does the person who is asking for help know how good or not the dog is going to be, or the person with the dog ?

1. you could have really good dog that was with someone who is not a stalker, they may not have a clue what to look for at the shot site or the dogs reactions when one the trail.

2. someone who is experenced and there dog is not fully trained yet (if at all )

maybe there is some need for some sort of testing, man and dog ( even if it means just following a simple trail )

Hi Anthony,

Realistically we, as in the SD, can't and don't want to get involved in testing or vetting. If some sort of 'qualification' or industry standard comes along then we can include the fact that someone has it into the information. We are providing the means to publish that someone is willing to do it and that is all. Members wanting to make use of someone else's services need to satisfy themselves by talking to the person directly.

It's like the classifieds section... we can't do a fraud check on everyone using the service, all we can realistically do is provide the means of connecting buyer with seller!

Cookingfat, I believe that this is where all the other attempts to have a Uk data base of tracking dogs came apart. Others wanted a register of qualified tracking dogs which I would agree would give the caller some sort of standard to expect but then it comes to who organises and runs the tests. Then comes along others willing to assist in training to tracking standards. Then the route of all evil - money raises it's head. Costs of tests, training etc. Persons see a niche to make money. It all becomes more complicated than is needed (IMO).

Why not just keep it simple. If you are willing and can assist others who find themselves in the unfortunate position of loosing a beast register on here. Be honest in your and your dogs abilities and experience. If you are going stalking in an area away from home look up the registered posters in the respective area, contact them through PM before you go. Hopefully if honest you will be informed as to what you can expect from the dog and handler, what costs maybe involved, the availability of the handler over the period you are stalking, be able to make the handler aware of the possibility of a call and can discuss what the handler would expect from you as regards shot site etc.

Using a stranger to help out. To me strangers can be friends you have just never met. Yesterday I spent an hour on the phone to a man I have never met but has stalking in my local area. Over ten years he has been stalking here but has never involved locals as he was wary that locals may take advantage. I can see where he is coming from but turns out we are the same type of person, like and value the same things, have common contact with persons in the stalking world, we can be of assistance to each other etc etc. A total gentleman and I certainly would not betray any trust he places in me.

i have a GSP that has worked deer for 5 years now and is excellent in that time i have only lost 3 he has been put onto and has found hundreds in commercial forestry in Scotland tracking some for over a mile . I have been phoned at all times of the day by fellow stalkers to assist them some over 400 miles away if a trophy beast has been lost i see no problem assisting a stalker if he has lost a beast but useualy by the time you get there they have been every where in that area trying to find it them selves and it doesnt matter where your dog goes they still think its some were else . First of all you must trust your dog 100% he has the noose we do not and ignore what they say if you find ths bullet strike ie blood hair then its up to the dog not the person who has lost it . I have been dragged 100s yards wishing i had never started some times and regretting it even more when i have found it but as stalkers its our duty to recover lost deer and welfare wise its also important to find the deer and despatch it as quickly as possible . I would assist any body local to me as would my son who has a GWP not very old but found his first sika last week after a 200yd track or so in sitka spruse so he looks promising . If a register is being set up we would gladly assist any body within 50 miles of us but as we spend about 6 weeks in Scotland we would be availiable up there some times of the year if needed by locals . The only problem arises is when a deer crosses bounderies where you dont have permision to go then it would be an offence to track a wounded animal on another persons land with out his permision as the deer legally belongs to the person who owns the land or stalking rights i think but this may not apply in Scotland20 but not sure on that one some body out there could probably enlighten me on this one

Dont think it is illegal to track a wounded deer onto neighbouring property, but carrying a dispatch weapon or rifle would be armed trespass. Again its keeping good relationships with your neighbours that counts and informing them if you have a wounded deer and letting them know you have a situation that needs resolving.
