Shoot more deer or see more deer that is the question?

I can see it working as an incentive to continue getting grants or as a condition for getting them going forwards. Maybe huge estates where it could be proven that the deer they hold are responsible for damage or RTCs then something could be done, but how to you go after a few 100 acre landowners who all neighbour each other and share parts of a single large woodland for example? How would this be monitored on a nationwide scale?
Realistically it couldn’t.
Exactly why I can’t see there being any form of compulsory culling. It’s simply unworkable.
Deer are too transient meaning that small land holdings can have a vastly varying population, almost hour to hour depending when a herd moves though for example.

That’s both north and south of the wall.

Or perhaps the folks with land sells to the individual with the time and business set up at a sensible, but suitably low enough rate as to make it worth both their whiles (say £2.20kg?), and subsequently gets the necessary cull 🤣!

It’s a genius, revolutionary idea I know.
Trouble with that is that the small venison retailer loses their main USP if they start selling meat from bought in carcases rather than from animals they've shot themselves.
I've looked into it myself. I could afford to pay up to £4/kg for head shot fallow, and still make money on the carcass, but my customers wouldn't like it. It's the story that sells the product, and retailing bought in venison just doesn't cut it.

You are very fortunate to be sufficiently well off that what you see as work you're prepared to do on an unpaid basis at your own expense. Your boss must love your ethic!
My worth ethic earns an extremely tidy profit and get paid accordingly, never you fear!

I am extremely well looked after, hence why I can do things for nothing, and hence why I can afford to give Carcasses away for nothing!

And why I can give away 2000 acres of stalking to friends, if I still wish to.

If you’re chasing round to butcher deer as a form of income, you’re not gonna be retiring very early, that’s for certain!

You know you work hard and earn good money when you don’t look at your tax that you pay every month!

I graft hard because I’m hellbent on retiring at 60, for me work is easy.

If others had my positive mental attitude to work, life in this world would be so much easier!

I was in the forces and never seen it as a job. The money was good as you went up the ranks. You know it’s a great job when you see it more as a hobby which pays.

why should they?
Owning woodland is a LUXURY.
If they can’t afford to manage their woodland properly then they should either sell it or shut up complaining about the state it’s in.
You can’t be whingeing about how many deer there are in your woods when doing nothing about it can you?

As we have seen, many different opinions with the stalking world.
There are so many different scenarios. If someone has made a successful small business culling, butchering and selling their venison...............good for you, hard work never hurt anyone.
I have done it, and sold most of it locally, especially during Covid, and lockdown. No clients to take out, but the culling still had to be done.

Some similar to Lee, give their deer away, or swap for beer or have another deal..................again, good for you, if the deal works, fine.

Shortly after the pandemic I gave a lot of my packaged venison away to a local food bank, run through a local church, I don't bother selling venison anymore. Most fills my freezer with mince, or I give it to my family, or neighbours.

Some of us managed to skip the law and got out during the pandemic.....................again good for you. Many were not allowed. Again a vast difference in how the restrictions were applied across the UK.

We all know areas where there are large numbers of deer, and little control. One area I have mentioned has always been a hot spot. Much debate has occured over the years as to who if anyone manages it. One of our very vocal members seemed to think that due to my comment of whom so ever is stalking it, and I quote (needs to up their game) a polite post telling us all that it was run by a syndicate would have sufficed.

Recently I have temporarily banned two members on here for arguing and swearing on the site, over a truck sale, that was not even their vehicle:rolleyes: It beggars belief!!

More deer need to be shot. I think we can all agree on this matter. How we go about sorting the issue out, and making venison more popular is another can of worms in my opinion. But what it won't help is arguing on this site. Every one has an opinion, no problem with that. If this was Pidgeon Watch, 99% of you would have been banned by now .

It's no more a luxury than owning a car or a television or a mobile phone. None of those things are necessities.
It's quite easy to own woodland and not be in a position to do much with it at the current time.
But agreed, there's no point moaning about deer but not doing anything about deer. Unless you've already done everything thing you realistically can, but the neighbours don't. In which case a bit of moaning is justified.

Nor me Lee, but its name seems to appear quite often. When I saw the name ZAP I though it was a new fly killer, only to find out it is one of the moderators on PW forum. Or at least that's what I have heard.

Some members on here bare the scars of being a member, Tim 243 being one of them, If I am not mistaken (apologise Tim if this is not the case)

Ok guys, just back from helping my better half's friend out who managed to get her electric car stuck in a field.......................now there's another thread I dare not start. Electric cars

In a nutshell that is why there will never be a huge venison market.
It’s a niche food

It was Pete, Frenchie Boy who was treated very badly by Zapp, however the Zapp (Hitler Vid) does resurface from time to time...Not sure who made that one up....
It might lighten up this long thread..

My experience is that it's those next door to the woodlands full of deer who are whinging. Those with the woods either don't care that it's full of deer or they're doing something about it.
