Shooting across a road

I agree with this chain of thought, are you shooting over land that you have permission on? The offence to be careful of is shooting within 50 feet of the centre of the highway and causing danger to road users.
Yes, from 1 Farm to another on the opposite side of the road, the walls being the boundary

It would need a conversation with your FEO to get the correct legal answer but it may open a can of worms and if they do not like your thinking and rationale it may affect their view on how safe they think you are. I suspect that they will say no as its a public road that you do not have permission to shoot over and there is therefore the danger that you may not see a road user and therefore cause risk to them. The ultimate risk to consider is that your round would easily kill a person.

You see a lot of game shoots moving about farms on adjacent roads and farms that have a public road through them and using shotguns, but a rifle round leaving the barrel is a whole different game and once it has been fired you have no control over it.

I'm not sure a FEO would know the law without much costly research having escalated it.

Some thoughts for you to ponder over, who owns the ground below the road, who owns the airspace and finally where, in law, knowing the answer to the two previous questions, has an offense been committed.

So the road i would be shooting across is a single lane country road, maybe a good 30_40ft higher than the road. I can also see anything left and right. Presumption is to take care whilst doing so? Thanks
My best advice would be to not discuss this shot on a forum :thumb: sorry I meant not take that shot at all ;)

And then with the regard to the particular circumstances make your own decision as to whether or not shooting across a road is a sensible, safe thing to do.

OK, define “Lawful authority

That is the wording on my FAC with regards to where I can use my firearms.

In my simple mind, “Lawful Authority” to me means I need permission to shoot “over”. So to the original post, if it’s a public road, you’d need authority from the Highway Agency or what ever the local branch is called to discharge your firearm and shoot over the road.
I stand to be corrected on the “Lawful authority” meaning.

I’d sooner open a gate than be in breach of my conditions on my FAC, but your call. I also have an open FAC, so it’s not a restricted condition in relation to that condition.
