Silent but warm smock

Hello,

I've been doing alot of hunting for boar in Argentina and I was looking for a warm smock. I was thinking one of the Ridgeline range such as the evolution or monsoon classic but we don't get lots of rain in La Pampa province where I hunt and we are generally very close to the animal.... because of this clothing which does not make any sound with movement is very important.

Is the ridgeline clothing suitable or should I keep looking?

Thanks,
Tom

If you want warm and silent wool is the way to go. I bought a smock from Boreal Mountain Anoraks a couple of years ago, well worth the money!

Ridgeline's Monsoon smock claims to be completely silent on their website.

It's probably not as quiet as some of the other makes out there, but mine has not let me down yet and we do get some fair rain here in Yorkshire.

Just to add that you will get wet in a Ridgeline smock, but from your own sweat...

If you don’t need a waterproof then I thoroughly recommend a Snugpak pile shirt or equivalent. Of if the best items I have bought. It packs up small and if lightweight. It keeps you warm and packs up small.

The old nomad fleeces were also excellent unfortunately no longer made. These were waterproof and totally silent. Although mine did soak up water like a sponge and become quite heavy and the cuffs became wet and leached water up inside. It funny how we look at things with rose tinted spectacles….

I have a Helikon Pilgrim smock. It's not as waterproof as Ridgeline but it's soft, silent and doesn't make you sweat like the RL Monsoon. Loads of pockets and can handle a shower or light rain. It's my summer smock.

I'm going to suggest that you don't want a warm smock but would be better to put on layers as necessary - if you have to walk any distance there's nothing worse than having a big heavy coat on. Going for some sort of layering system allows for a lot of flexibility.

The Buffalo Special 6 is an excellent insulating layer that will take a fair bit of punishment, is quiet, is warm, and works well with other layers or on its own. Other versions are available but the Special 6 is hard to beat.

For a smock look no further than the British Army windproof smock - they aren't waterproof but are shower proof, they are quiet, good protection from the wind, available in a wide range of colours these days, great pockets, robust, cheap though seemingly getting more expensive by the day. There's really nothing to dislike about them.

Further supporting the Special 6 and Windproof Smock is that they saw extensive use in the early 1980s when hunting down Argentinian wildlife in the most challenging of conditions and so they have a proven track record of success.
