Available: SIMULATED STALK DAY DAYS

Just a quick question - I'm currently stuck on a target only FAC that states that I can only shoot at a Home Office approved club.

Is that going to be an issue?

Sorry Ben I meant to respond to you yesterday and forgot.

If your FAC only allows you to shoot at Home office Approved Clubs then I am afraid you won’t be able to use your own rifle. You can of course use an estate rifle FOC and just pay for the ammo.

If you choose to put in a variation for different conditions in the future you can of course reference the course as experience and training. That said there isn’t a certificate issued for you to frame and hang up next to your red swimming badge I am afraid. 😜

Thanks for the reply.

I have my DSC-1 booked in for March, so hopefully with that in place can request a change to my certificate.

Looks like a smashing day out. Am I correct in interpreting my conditions in the same way?

I'd like to (safely & competently) move out of the ranges and into some more scenic terrain, to hit steel & also paid/mentored stalks in the future...but with my own rifle(s)! I might try pinging a message to my FAO and await future dates from you.

Best of luck with the upcoming dates

That is correct. I am pretty sure we could provide a booking letter to allow you to request a change in your conditions to allow you to use your rifle on paid stalks etc.

Thanks! I've pinged my firearms team an informal request (London Met) to see how they feel about the variation request...it took 3 return to sender due to administrative errors & omissions to get my last variation back complete/correct, so unlikely I would be in a position to enroll in your current dates.

Interesting to see on your website that you have "Fully insured as a commercial range" - I only shoot fullbore at Bisley with and without my home club, as I'm an individual NRA member and use their ranges. Is the Stalkers Day setup outside of your commercial range area? Either way, I'd like to dip my toe into paid stalks and eventually certification, so will follow-up with my firearms team to try and get a variation regardless.

Thanks again.

Forgive me.

That condition (to me) is ambiguous.

Devil's Advocate's reading of that condition:-

"I am a member of (blacked out club), I can go and shoot targets on ranges which are legally and safely constructed".

Nothing in that condition, which says you have to shoot targets on (blacked out club) ranges. :-|

Agreed - why licensing depts make have to make it so hard to understand is beyond me. If you are a member of the noted club then that part of the condition is met so it can be read as follows:

"The firearms and ammunition shall be used for target shooting on ranges which are legally and safely constructed and maintained"

Just had a proper look at mine, and I have the following:

So on review I think I am OK to shoot targets on any range safe for that class of firearm as long as I am a member of a HO approved club and have insurance.....

Might check with my FAO, but I think perhaps I have a little more flexibility than I thought!

Ditto for me for a March or April date to get the driven season fully finished. I also potentially depending on dates have one of the keepers off my syndicate shoot who would be interested as well.

Just a few impressions of my recent day out with Andy and Jason on one of their simulated stalking days.

I’m still pretty new to stalking, and have been out on a few guided stalks, but predominantly shoot on my permissions for ground game and fox. I took my 18 year old lad who rough shoots locally too, with the hope of getting him interested in stalking - with a view of giving us something to do together hopefully in the future.

There were 6 of us, which seemed a good group size with varying levels of experience, ranging from lots, to just starting out. Jason who ran the scenarios and took the safety briefing, is clearly a very experienced guy who is happy to share his knowledge and experience - and does it in an informative and interesting way. No ‘war stories’ about how he did something, just talking us through what to think about and how to maximise opportunities.

Andy is in the background sorting things, always with a smile, and making sure the day went smoothly……even if he did forget my coffee order on the run to the local cafe…….😉

After a zero check and basic capability assessment, the groups were split into 3s, and we did a morning and afternoon scenario. I won’t go into details, but they were very good, giving everyone a chance to shoot and be involved, and introducing real life situations such as follow up shots, and potentially awkward shooting positions, as well as testing different ranges for shots.

The break while the other group were on a scenario gave people the chance to chat about their experiences and didn’t seem over long, and actually broke the day up well.

Lunch is included and plenty of it too, eaten alfresco, as the site is still being developed. I actually liked that, I’ve been to a fair few ranges and while most have been good, and one is excellent (nearby Corinium), it’s hard to simulate a walk and stalk scenario - but Andy and Jason have been able to get pretty close TBF.

Day closed with a chance to try some longer range zero checks on steel at about 200m. I decided not to do this as my lad started out by hitting 5 out of 5…..even though I’d given him 5 rounds of dubious ammunition……and the journey home would be unbearable if I missed…..

We knocked it on the head about 4pm, after getting there around 915am. For the cost of the day, great value and enjoyable too. I learnt a lot, got to see some very Gucci kit (Giles😉) and met some good people. What more can you ask for?

Only downside was my lad now wants a set of Viperflex carbon quads…….

Totally recommended. 👍
