This is a good example of what the budget broadband providers 'forget' to tell you. The reason the likes of Sky, TalkTalk, Virgin ADSL (not cable) can offer such cheap prices is because:
a) The connections are high contention, i.e. they are selling a finite amount of bandwidth to a hell of a lot of customers
b) Their resilience is low because they only have the bare minimum links between themselves and the internet so when something goes wrong on one route like today you have thousands of customers competing for the remaining routes
The server for this site is physically located in Surrey, so it is likely the primary route for many ISP's would be via LINX in London where the problem was today. The more expensive broadband providers would have had access to more alternate routes and/or less customers competing for those routes. It's route dependent too, which is why it only affects certain people connecting to certain sites.

Yeah, unfortunately you guys up there still have the short straw on connectivity in many places. I was reading a funny blog the other day about a guy in Scotland who couldn't get ADSL but his mate 5 miles away could... so he rigged up a microwave link from the roof of his house to the roof of his mate's house. Then he found out that his neighbour's garage door was acting like a giant reflector for the signal so that whenever his neighbour opened his garage door he lost his connection. Every time his neighbour left his garage door open he was sneaking over and closing it again!
Only in Scotland!

This am around 08.30, unable to connect to SD ,everything else, nanoseconds to connect. then around 09.15 bingo!....... like it never was busted!

Although my internet connection is suspect (no connection at all for 2 days, only just got it back), a 3 Dongle, I have never found this site slow, although I sometimes get the odd page load that hangs, usually a quick click on the back button and trying again fixes it.

when you like in the sticks, its aways slow so cant say i have notice any differance !
