Looking for a small knife , specifically for removing the anal tract when dressing a deer.

Short boning type knife
What are folk using ? I don’t want to be carrying a full sized boning knife just to do one job.

Prefer somit cheap like a mora.

There might be tons of options.
Budget wise look into a Victorinox or F.Dick Rabbit knife or Poultry knife.
There is also a Dexter rabbit or Poultry knife. Rabbit and Poultry names are used interchangeably

That's assuming you want a small fixed blade and can sheath to carry it.

Honestly I've seen mates skin a goat cleanly with a small pocket knife. Every cut.

Myself, I have a few knives and knives for different purposes but in part it's what you feel comfortable wielding.

Thanks for that , I have a hundred knives but only ever carry a swingblade for stalking. Just think a small fixed blade might make a neater job.
I’ll have a look

Plus one for Hultafors, started carrying one few months ago instead of faithful old Opinel. Blade is shorter than the handle but has done everything I've tried with it. Less than a fiver, can't lose it with it's dayglow orange handle and rigid sheath.
Easy to sharpen, doesn't blunt quickly either. All round, I'll stick with them for the foreseeable future.

Portland Ultralites, P90 in its natural environment. Just as I thought it would be excellent knife for taking the back side out of the smaller deer and doing everything else as well. Also made taking the heads off very easily.
With it being skeletonized its handy for hanging on a branch when doing a suspended gralloch.

try a Victorinox " rabbit " model if its a cheap but half way decent boner this it it ! I might add i have not used this method of anal tract removal in a long while now . Just carefully move the haunches open on the bone cut the bone either side of said pelvis bone an fee the pipe out through the gap created as the bringing piece of pelvis is removed .
If someone wants it doing that way though , its not worth discussion.
Why buy a cheap bushcraft type of knife for butchery ? i have never got the whole Mora thing , they dont come close to commercial butchery knives for this kind of work . if you had a load of students on a bushcraft course etc some of the mora knives are ideal in cost and basic function

As BB says, Victorinox rabbit is a great knife, although mine lives in the larder. For field I bought a Hultafors which works but it’s quite bit for a specific purpose so I bought one of these that just clips to bino pouch. It’s a cheap Browning thing, perfect for fiddly jobs, was around 30 quid. The only downside is the thumb stud is so close to the hinge it’s a bit of a sod to open.

Has fully processed a muntjac from field to fork with only a wipe down needed (made me realise how much easier they are to skin warm)

Cold Steel Pendleton mini Hunter is also worth a look, good stainless steel, drop point, full flat grind, grippy synthetic handle.

Don’t want to split the pelvis . Need it left intact.

Mora have been excellent knives in my experience so I’ve ordered the little one mentioned above.

I missed it on the website as it was listed as a carving knife.

Grind doesn’t interest me. It gets rattled through a pocket sharpener before I use it so whatever it starts out with it ends up whatever the sharpener provides.

Well, you're really missing out then. The pleasure of not using a Scandi grind for gralloch and skinning is a fine thing!

I keep buying various size and shape Moras, they work, you can use a short bladed robust for the gralloch ,sternum and legs.
Then a small sticky sharp fine blade as previous posts for the roundtail job.
And they are CHEAP!
I have nice Bucks ,etc that don't go out of the drawer so much, but they are enjoyed for craftsmanship as well as quality
