I’ve just read an article about sporting marksmanship courses and I feel as though this would be something that would benefit me!

I’ve been shooting air rifle/rim fire for years and I’ve just moved up to stalking with CF.

Whilst I believe I understand the basics, I would like to understand the detail behind the rifle and the finer points such as windage, MPBR and most importantly improve my accuracy and confidence, which has dropped off recently through a lack of rifle time!

The chap in the article was Ben Lightowler if anyone know him?

I’m based near Cambridge but happy to travel if need be?

Can anyone recommend a course or instructor?

I am interested in something similar. I went on a really good course run by Bradley Bourner. He was a fantastic instructor but at a day long, wasn't really long enough.

I also found my lightweight barrel heated up too much but was good.
 
If you think that it would be of benefit to you and you can afford it go for it Lee.
I know nothing of the chap you have mentioned so can't comment on him however I have heard good things of IanF.

I would urge caution before booking with someone so check them out carefully as there are an awful lot of chancers out there.
 
Thanks for the replies guys and I have heard horror stories of people paying for tuition / stalks and spending a wasted day :(

I think that experienced range time is what I am going to benefit from the most, understanding the techniques and then practicing it to cement them in!

The stalking part of it would come later?

If there’s a suitable fullbore rifle club within reasonable distance of you I’d recommend joining it as it will offer excellent opportunity for structured practice. An increasing number of rifle clubs run ‘sporting rifle’ shoots on realistic targets (DJV etc) involving shooting from sticks & all the other usual positions. They are sociable, low pressure events that greatly aid field shooting. Far better than a ‘course’.
 
Tim Pilbeam down in East Sussex has a range that can be used for shooting principles and then also has the ability to take you on simulated stalks using steel targets from 50m to 300m.

He's a really nice guy and has a lot to teach. The benefit of the simulated stalks are you're guaranteed to see deer to shoot😂 this is beneficial if you're more interested in the shooting and stalking principles and practice rather than shooting a live deer.

I’ve had mixed experiences with clubs, the rifle club I joined a few years back was a clique and I lasted 3 meetings! 🤦‍♂️ I will have a look for full bore clubs and see how we go!!

We can help you with this but Gloucestershire based. Our sim stalking courses already feature bipod, stick and improvised shooting positions. Because we run small courses happy to add more in for your specific requirements.

I was in a club for several years. Really friendly and I learnt a lot. The only issue was that I learnt very quickly not to talk about stalking. Most of the members were extremely anti, good place to learn though

My wife is in a very good fullbore rifle club. Very sociable and very nice people, all of whom stalk. I think she is the only one who isn't ex forces, but that really doesn't matter.

It does worry me how many 'Tactical' Walting types you see at some clubs though, generally on the larger side with black t shirts and camouflaged trousers. The club I was a member of banned camouflage for that reason. I have seen quite a few of these running about at Bisley.

Have a look at this website. Brad is a top notch guy who has definitely been there and done it !! I understand he may be closer to you than he used to be.

I had an email 'chat' with Brad last year, as I wanted to scoot up to Scotland for a couple of days and learn from a bloke who knows what he is on about.

Whilst the 'company' is still upon and running, I think that Brad is now working full time as a Keeper down in England.

On a purely selfish note, I am furious.

I worked with plenty of his Mob in my old game - never met one I did not like.

If you are Cambridge based you could consider the Cambridge gun club based in Cottenham. They have 50 and 100 yard ranges. (A 200 yard range currently in the making i believe). Small and full bore.
You can get instruction and it's very friendly and other shooters are also helpful.
Not sure if it's what your looking for but have a look at the website.
 
I can also recommend Ian F - started my deer stalking with a marksmanship training with him as shooting off sticks and walking around the English countryside was different to previous firearm experience.

My infrequent deer stalking I also led me to have a refresh afternoon when ever I have gone to Ian F for stalking.

That is very sad, not only that he has stopped a teaching job he was clearly very good at but also that such a decent Scot has moved south, thereby pushing the numpty ratio further the wrong way.
