If your on a budget don't discount a kia sportage/ Hyundai tuscon, awd/4wd .Reasonable fuel economy.
Put decent tyres on it ,and it goes where the big boys do .
Had 2x fallow and a Roe in the back of mine but wash the blood out or you get a right rollicking .
Loads of older ones cheap enough.

Talking to a pal at the range on Saturday - his Dacia was rear-ended in early December - still in a hire car because parts haven’t arrived!

worse that that, I spoke to someone recently who had someone bump his 2 month old Ford Ranger - damage was literally only a rear bumper and quarter panel but his insurers wrote it off as the parts were on 10 month back order! Must have been cheaper to write off that pay for an equivalent hire vehicle for that length of time

I don’t generally shoot deer in NI but do in Perthshire and have done for many years. The reason I bought one in the first place was I saw what it could do as an ATV up and down the glens - with 3 hinds in the back (rear seats out) and pulling a trailer with 4 more in it.
That was enough for me….

My mate has one we have had 3 Fallow us two plus his dog, they do work, Jimmy’s skip over the ground 4X4’s plough through it, take your pick but for the money they take some beating

Diagonally, yes.

I removed the back seats, plenty of room for my kit and any friendly deer that wish to have a nap in the back.

It really does put a smile on my face!

Because the op mentioned the FL2 and the outlander both not new and possibly due to the short time of having a license and therefore the cost of insurance, might be wrong though.

just like @Smellydog I’ve had both a Jimny and the duster. I loved both and equally good off road although the Jimny would probably win if the going got extreme. In the real world the duster is easier to live with having more room inside and better road manners. I’ve regularly taken the duster from Ayrshire to Oxford return in one day, wouldn’t even have thought about it with the Jimny. It all depends what you want / need the car to do. My duster was built in India and suffered from rust, the new ones are now built in Romania and the issue has been sorted.

A lot of us can't afford new cars, and many new cars are rubbish for deerstalking unless you're prepared to spend a lot.

You can still buy new Jimny's...good cars but overpriced unfortunately.

Insurance is lower on some of the older 4WD and they are a lot cheaper to buy than newer ones, especially with a limited budget!

Be careful. A 10 + year old off read vehicle which hasn’t been maintained perfectly is a money grave on end. Better spend your money on something more recent.

Rav 4. It’s a Toyota! Don’t get the 180 version like I have, it does about 30mpg the 140bhp std version I had before was plenty good enough and did 40mpg. Great solid motor.

Skoda Yeti 4x4, Renault kangoo 4x4,Dacia Duster, VW TCross or Tiguan.

The Freelanders are thirsty. Subaru Foresters are great but also thirsty.

Fiat 4x4 Panda is a little beast of a machine, especially the more off road spec one.

With any of the above add a tow bar for a trailer and / or tow bar carrier to carry bigger deer.

+1 for the RAV4 or a 1600 vitara if cost is an issue. A good set of all terrain tyres and you’ll be sorted

If you’re looking very long term and dedicated vehicle a new jimny commercial is around £22k. Insurance is van based so more reasonable than the larger 4x4s mentioned

Having had a Mitsubishi Outlander and currently driving a Freelander 2 I’d say you can’t go wrong with either.

The Landrover is a bit more compact than the outlander but I quite like that.

It is a very big part of my shooting history - the last 12 years of it in fact and it ain’t finished yet!
