Stalking with a roe sack.

In the heat of the moment you probably won’t notice it’s there tbh ;-)

I’ve shot with a roe sack on for a decade or more, and prefer it to getting blood all over my clothes or carrying a drag sled in the field ;-) if I shoot a buck an hour before midnight or so, in high summer, down a gully two miles from the car, I’ll want to extract it there and then and not go back for a sled or risk getting the car stuck and having to wake the farmer up in the middle of the night asking for a pull.

Long and short, they’re a godsend if you have a long carry or want to hunt without a bipod as they’re great to shoot over..

Like McKenzie, i have one with flat leather straps - it came with lining but I ripped it out.

Have some practice with it and see how it works. Once you pop a deer in there and realise how much more pleasant it is to carry, you’ll appreciate it hugely.

Monarch waist pack does the job! Easy to click and drop if need to crawl or squeeze in somewhere.
Also takes two roe no problem and room for other small items too

Wear one, shoot with it on, be lost without it. Walk long distances and don't want to walk back to get it.
Got fallow, roe and muntjac in it no problem.
Dragging is a pain, whack it on your back, off you go. Mines a monach.

Hi all,

My birthday wasn’t all that long ago, and my wife surprised me by getting me a roe sack as a present. I’ve often wondered about the potential benefits of using one, and as I now have the kit it would seem a shame not to give it a go.

However, it has pretty wide and reinforced shoulder straps, which would be ideal for comfort when actually carrying a roe or two, but I’ve not quite sussed out how I would manage to shoot whilst wearing it. When I mount the rifle it sits directly on top of the strap, and I can’t get anything close to a normal gunmount whilst wearing it.

I was hoping that those of you who use these regularly might be able to offer some insight as to a way around this. Do I just try and get used to shooting with it on - which I can’t quite imagine doing? Do I try and take it off quickly before a shot? What would your normal approach be?

All and any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

5pointer.
I just get in with it I’ve a battered harkila one don’t notice it on really far outways the discomfort of dragging one a long way

I'll 2nd the monarch sack. I've got the bigger one (sika sack) which will take 2 roe, but you do start to regret that 2nd shot once you try to get it onto your shoulders.
I'm aware of it on my back, but if the shot is needed, its never hindered me. Like many others have said, if you have the chance to stalk into a beast, i slip it off the shoulders. It will quite often get used as a rifle rest to shoot off.
Certainly helps prevent contamination, if your on a long walk, you can get your juice and sandwiches in. Or if its a doe box in the winter, a spare layer.

I hate them.

try wearing it upside down when it's empty so that the webbing is over your shoulders and the reinforced straps hang under your armpits. They interfere with your rifle less then.

Just turn it right way up when you put deer in it

Helps me.

I have been stalking for years with a Monarch Sika sack (allows you to carry more) I must admit I never thought of taking it off as this would give the game away for many a shot. I dont find it makes any difference other than the rifle not wanting to stay on your shoulder so readily when carrying between shots. I have even shot a good number of times with a munti or two in the bag, though it does become a lot harder with weight bearing down, so if I can I tend to hang the deer up at strategic route spots and go back that way on the stalk and bag them up. Sometimes that just isnt possable of course so its a carry all the way, but a long carry will have you looking at the ground rather than whats out in front! Basically certainly with the Monarch products it is very comfortable to stalk and shoot with the sack on. Ohh and the monarch has popper straps to keep it all closed when not carrying too.

I stalk with a monarch sika sack and don't find it a problem taking a shot with the rifle butt resting on the shoulder strap.

It's a bit bulkier in winter with a jacket on under the sack but still works fine.

I find my aim steadier off sticks with a sika or roe already in the sack.
