Subsonic 308 150g or 220g

Hornady used to make a .308 caliber 130-gr Single Shot Pistol bullet, which expanded at lower velocity. Might still be some lying around on a shelf in a gun store.

Any flatnose 150-gr bullet made for the .30-30 will expand at low velocity and deliver a good wound channel if it does not expand. And it will stabilize at low velocity from a slow twist.

are those obtainable here in the uk?

Might be a bit hard to find over here as we haven't had pistols/revolvers in general circulation for a loooong time. ;)

I've actually found the Hornady Flat Point 170gr Interlock (a .30-30 bullet) to be very effective in my .308 at around 2500 fps on medium game, but I'd still plump for a bullet that was designed specifically to expand at subsonic velocities if going down that route. The 300BLKtalk forum is a mine of information on the subject provided you don't attempt to apply the information directly to other rifles/cartridges - 300AAC Blackout rifles invariably run 1:7" or thereabouts twist rates and can stabilise the heavier bullets through 16.5" (bolt gun) or even shorter barrels on the semis, so bear it in mind.

AFAIK handgun hunting never was legal in the UK even pre-ban, or at any rate no police force would issue a variation for a pistol for this purpose - which may not be the same thing as 'illegal', but had the same effect in stopping it happening. Nevertheless, light US manufactured 30-calibre handgun hunting bullets were not uncommon, and before the (now rescinded) ban on using expanding bullets for other than live quarry shooting came into effect were moderately popular among handloaders. They offered excellent results, low cost and low recoil for those looking for those attributes.

Hannams long sold a 130gn Hornady Spire Point which was designated as a handgun hunting bullet back in those days and a similar weight Remington made bullet under its budget Relcom brand. Looking at the company's current retail product list, there is still a 130 flat base Hornady Spire Point #3020 which Hornady Manufacturing lists as a varmint bullet these days, but I suspect is the same product as I used to buy from the same outfit when it was called 'Tim Hannam' and was across the farmyard from Swillington Shooting Supplies. Hannams also lists its 150gn Spire Point sibling, Hornady 3031.

3020 ............. 30 CAL .308 130 GR SP ............. 100 £48.45
3031 ............. 30 CAL .308 150 GR SP ..............100 £44.60

In addition there is still an equivalent 'Relcom' bullet listed, a Remington made 'Core-Lokt' design.

RB308125S ............308-125g PSPCL WC ............ Remington ...............100 .....£26.80

I only ever shot these as short-range target / plinking bullets on ranges in light 308 Win loadings so have no idea how frangible they would be at low MVs in tissue, but suspect they are pretty fast expanding compared to many heavier out and out deer bullet designs.

OK so I can import thease from Germany even thow the price shots up to 75 euro :( and then theres 15 euro postage :(

Problem is I thought the Tika T3 was a 1:10 twist and it turns out to be a 1:11.

Its a lot of cash to waste if they wont stabalize.

Will 1:11 make that much difference?

ATB

I doubt they will stabilize without a 1:7 twist as mine didnt. Bt energetic do stabilise.

Thanks, Laurie!
I didn't know if they were available over there. There was also a 120-gr 7mm SSP bullet for the Thompson and Magnum Research hand cannons.

I friend has the MR in 7mm-08 and has taken deer at over 200 yards with it, but the velocity was still twice the speed of sound.

I used to load the 130-gr .308 SSP in my FR-8, for a mild hunting load, again, still 2600 fps at the muzzle.

My point is that these were not frangible bullets; they just expanded a lower impact velocities, as the various handguns with barrels from 12" to 15", launch a normal .308 or 7mm-08 load about 400 to 500 fps slower than a 24-inch rifle ( like 2,400 fps ).

So, for fox, they should be great, and half the price of the 120-gr 7mm or 125-gr .308 Nosler BT bullets I have gone to now.

Don’t forget, TB is on the banned list for next year. Buy now if you’re still going ahead with this.
Ken.

I have a friend in New Zealand who uses Lehigh sub-sonics and has had his rifle made with a 1 in 8 twist barrel, this is seemingly essential. I am told they work very effectively. He zeros his rifle with both a sub-sonic round and a full power load and has the adjustment needed written on the inside of his lens cover, so he can engage deer, pigs and goats at long range or shoot at very close range over his dog without deafening it. He really rates the Lehigh bullets.
