Sussex shooters...zeroing range/ground?

Morning all.

Have searched previous similar posts but have come up with nothing so just asking for advice from localish shooters.

I live on the South coast near Brighton and am struggling to find anywhere remotely nearby to zero my .308 when I change scope, mounts or ammo. From what Ive read Im clearly not the first and this issue is not just confined to my area sadly.

I shoot 22lr at a 100m local range but its rimfire (well .22lr) only. I know theres Lydd to the East and Bisley North-West around 1.5-2 hours away but don't really need or want to become a full member of a target club if I can avoid it. The £ being the main thing, not the drive.

I have rights to shoot on land near Crawley through a friend on here but it does put him out considerably as he has to coordinate it with the landowners, his work schedule and other syndicate members. Apparently shooting off 20x rounds to zero in the woods doesn't attract deer near the high seats! ;)

So Im just asking for local advice to see if theres a little publicised range/land nearby please (My 22 range was 'under my nose' for 3 years without me knowing...a casual chat in a gun shop finally made me aware of its existence!). Would only need 100 yards and it would be with a .308 moderated.

Thank you.:)

Bisley do a Stalkers day, every Friday, you don’t need to be a member, just a DSC1 holder as a minimum.
Electronic targets at 100 meters, no restrictions of calibers or moderated/unmoderated rifles.
There are shooting benches available for zeroing, as well.

I agree, we really need a range in the Home Counties but as far as I know there isn’t one

Im in Kent and have the same issue as I am not allowed to zero on my permissions.

I book the Kynamco underground range near Thetford and go with a pal for a 3 hour session roughly every quarter. Bit of a drive but worth it.

I've recently built some clay backstops with excavated material to give me 120yrd, 180yrd and 320yrd practice. I had considered allowing others to use it for zeroing but concluded that I would have problems over noise, planning and range regulatory procedures. Nowhere near Sussex anyway!

Thank you...I'll look into that but sadly not done DSC1 yet.

Sounds great but as you say I think it gets complicated if you allow others to use it...insurance, regs etc. Good luck though!

If you already hold an FAC and are a BASC member you can attend their Bisley range days courtesy of BSRC, as a member of BASC Rifle Club. They host 5 a year usually between April-October. If required on the day they will also assess your competency to be issued with a SSC card which will then allow you to shoot at Bisley unsupervised along with some other MOD ranges. I understand some BDS regions also have a similar scheme.

Bugger. Im insured with Country Club as they offered the same cover for a fraction of the price. Have been to BSRC at Bisley mind...good set up. Its where I bought my first rifle from too. Working towards a SSC would be useful for the future I reckon. Many thanks.

Problem with cheaper is there is always a reason why with BASC you also get other benefits as well as the insurance offered. I’m not saying BASC is the best but there membership does offer more than some others
Always best to do your home work and choose which suits best clearly your current membership fails on this also worth mentioning is DSC level 1 not only does it give you some basic knowledge but it does have other benefits evident here

I use the stalkers facility at Bisley on a Friday and I think it’s great value and easy to use

Not heard of Country Club, but does go to show that some organisations can offer more benefits but obviously at a higher membership cost or premium. It is a condition of my HO approved club that full members also join the NRA. Not something that I was overly keen to do as many of their shooting disciplines do not interest me; however I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the annual membership fee not only included 3rd party insurance liability cover, but that cover for my shooting kit was also included as standard.

Join the Cinque Ports gun club. Chris Roper is the man to speak too. They shoot both Hythe and Lydd ranges in south Kent.

There is a small Private range next door to West kent shooting ground you can hire by the hour, 01892 838256. Cheers Geoff.

Thanks Uncle f. At the point of membership I was on a tight budget and just needed the most cover possible to shoot with a syndicate. Id also heard lots moaning about BASC (but really don't want to kick that one off...just what Id heard/read). I am working towards DSC1...but a bit tricky if you can't zero your rifle! ;-) Many thanks.

Is that the number of the facility/owner Geoffrey? And any idea of the hourly rate please? Thank you
Yes thats the number of the range Owner. give him a ring and ask the price a couple of friends have used the range i think its basic but ideal for Adjusting Zero.

Noted and appreciated. With regards to level one you don’t need a rifle as one should be available from the course provider (at a small cost no doubt)

good luck
