Get yourself a well bred labThinking of another dog after losing my HWV a few months ago…I know these are totally different! Miniature Teckels, what’s peoples thoughts on these and does Anyone use these for stalking? As in woodland stalking , having them with you at all times off the lead? Not left in a vehicle till required![]()
I beg to differ! One has to ask yourself this question- how is a walking draft excluder going to help you when you fluffed up a shot on a roe deer and it’s leg is swinging?
No teckel will help you much except chase it , push it on and bark a lot.
In my personal opinion a pointless stalking dog more of a lap dog.
how far have you gone after a leg shot or highly mobile deer on a chase?I beg to differ!
I will never chase, I follow-up if necessary* in a measured approach, working either my 7th Vizsla off-lead quartering the ground until scent track cut and then follow-up, or the Teckel on long-lead where track established.how far have you gone after a leg shot deer on a chase?
Cant understand the want for them as a working dog. Not good enough for earth work, too small to confidently use as a stalking dog.One has to ask yourself this question- how is a walking draft excluder going to help you when you fluffed up a shot on a roe deer and it’s leg is swinging?

With all due respect in that situation your well bred lab won't be much good either. I've seen three legged deer run as fast as four legged. One has to ask yourself this question- how is a walking draft excluder going to help you when you fluffed up a shot on a roe deer and it’s leg is swinging?
Good vizla, pointer or GWP, good well bred BGS or Hanovarian or even better a Jagt terrier! With all due respect in that situation your well bred lab won't be much good either. I've seen three legged deer run as fast as four legged.
You need a big lurcher for that job. My little sod will keep pace with a lab and hunt on for miles believe me I know, the little ba....d has done it. If you get a three legged just keep firing.
Had a Jagt terrier, bloody awful waste of time, very expensive to buy and vets bills.Good vizla, pointer or GWP, good well bred BGS or Hanovarian or even better a Jagt terrier!
If was to have my time tracking again I would have a Jagt terrier, fearless industrial nuclear black torpedos, once it lock on it’s coming down!
But You get the right breeding and you’ll have a cracking tracking lab, with sharpness too!
But sadly the sharpness has been bred out of them now days, there is only 2 breeders I would go to for that job.
I'm guessing you know nothing of dogs in general, Dogs of smaller stature including the main dog under discussion, are capable of chasing the arse off of Boar all day long on German drives.how far have you gone after a leg shot or highly mobile deer on a chase?
That they may do in Germany, but pointless here you have legal boundaries!I'm guessing you know nothing of dogs in general, Dogs of smaller stature including the main dog under discussion, are capable of chasing the arse off of Boar all day long on German drives.
That opinion you are entitled to, but unless you have experience with other breeds as well as your own favourite, you are commenting from inexperience. That they may do in Germany, but pointless here you have legal boundaries!
Their is a vast difference in hunting in the uk and Germany, sorry but for a versatile tracking dog in the uk they are at the bottom of my list

Lets just have a watch then ... OK, it aint a Deer and the dog is latched to the Pig not the other way around.I have experience with other breeds too!
Honestly what is your walking draft excluder going to do on a leg shot stag in the rut?
In fact on any highly mobile deer that’s been wounded?

Given that most people stalk with no dog whatsoever- what's the difference? A leg shot deer needs a dog at heel that can be slipped immediately, and it needs to be pretty swift to close the distance. It took my GWP a good 300 metres to catch up a leg shot fallow - and in many situations that would be over a boundary or a road. One has to ask yourself this question- how is a walking draft excluder going to help you when you fluffed up a shot on a roe deer and it’s leg is swinging?

Probably because it was almost a non issue. That they may do in Germany, but pointless here you have legal boundaries!

And very clearly you know nothing about tracking wounded deer
