The out yesterday or today thread and...

First pheasant of 2025 taken with a 10g muzzleloader!
To be honest I missed a few! Poked at one like a complete novice but this one was a nice quartering away shot me in a tight spot so I was pleased.
Lead shot naturally #5@ 1.5oz.

Nearly forgot...the boom of shooting a squirrel put a large flock of teal up off a nearby pond and out of nowhere a peregrine nearly took one but missed and then a good ariel chase took place right in front of me in the high winds.
A magical moment that makes the effort really worth it.
In a similar vein i was checking the access before the shoot on Friday and got to watch and sort of record 2 Goshawks "playing" with 2 Ravens

Friend of mine use to tell me about the goshawks and ravens on his sika ground in the low land laws of Scotland. He said the ravens were an even match to the goshawks on the wing!

Lovely cock :) 👍

Farmer rang again this afternoon " geese are here"

So I grabbed the 243 and set off to see if I could bag one.

Anyway they were in the middle of a field with cattle and sheep so I had to stalk right around them to get a safe shot.

Once in position I waited until 2 were lined up and shot them both with one round 😀

Continued for a walkabout and managed to stalk into a roe doe at only 5 yards away.

Out today to fit the high seat from the trailer to its new permanent site, back of the stack yard, with an optimum field of fire, the bit that is low down behind the farm in the thermal pic.IMG_2819(1).webpIMG_2905.webpIMG_2904.webp

I had a good old wander today in search of my 1st pheasant of 2025

Glorious weather so I decided to walk some hedgerows. I Checked out a sunny bankside with a few bramble bushes and flushed a hen pheasant which lifted behind me so I swung round and folded it which then flushed another 4 to my right so swung around and picked out the cock and folded him too. I reloaded and another hen lifted which also crashed into the hedge , so 3 for 3 😀

Continued round and lifted a strong covey of around 14 partridges, as they exploded a single bird went right handed and at a good distance I folded it.

A few woodies flushed from a nearby wood and I dropped a couple of crackers.

Back at the farmyard was talking to the farmer when 3 crows came overhead so duly dropped one right in front of him , he seemed impressed.

He was telling me that he had just lost a bull to acorn poisoning.

Nice afternoon but I walked a lot of miles so really earned these birds .😀

I've not shot a grey for decades. I forget how beautiful they are.
Well done.

Went stalking today but the pheasants told me of a fox across a marshy field and sure enough the thermal found it about 400yds on the other side of the marsh so I got my skates on actually closed the gap really well and it chose to come my way somewhat too!
Then I lost it in the reeds so I got down and made a squeal . That was a mistake because it didn't respond and I was none the wiser but it would now be looking my way! But the coos came a running in and kicked it out of its seat and it ran away. So I stood up and took aim, it stopped to look back at the rampaging cattle behind me, it ran on some more and stopped again to look back. At that point it was a fair way and the sight was level with it's back. The trigger broke and a thwack came back towards me.
191 paces later!! There it was with a neck wound very dead. Good ol' 3030.

You've had a great day today , great shot 👍

Hi Smellydog. Good shooting on that fox. What bullets/projectiles are you using? Good old 30/30...if you need it explained then you'll never understand it.
