Thermal Imagers - alternatives to Pulsar

Can any of the x eye users indicate the run time of the inner battery before it needs recharging?

This aspect seems to be only vaguely addressed, I have to admit it is the main offputting aspect of these units from my point of view, the unquantified run time, and how they are replaced, the costs and down time associated, etc. I think they would have been more widely accepted than up till now had the battery been an easy drop-in affair.

I am out foxing tonight so will try to note the time. but I think the runtime is about 4 to 5 hours. Yes the battery is internal. It comes with a 3 year warranty so if it knackers up in that time I will return it so not worried about that issue. It can be charged externally with a power pack. So not as convenient as swapping the battery out. Again, I am comparing against a 6 year old thermal unit where the battery’s lasted an hour and a half so suits me, might not suit you.

I have the XEye E6pro. You're right, run time is between 4-5 hours. I have the unit always on, but in standby / sleep mode when I'm not viewing, however it doesn't seem to make a great deal of difference to run time how often you're scanning with it vs having it on standby.

If I need to run it longer, to be honest, it's really easy to have a small battery pack in my pocket and the microUSB lead plugged in to the bottom of the unit, whilst still using it. And, if the battery pack has a 2A output, it will charge the unit much faster than it can draw current, so plugged in for 30 mins or so gives you another hour or more unplugged.

The other great thing about the XEye is that the warranty is transferrable if sold on, but you can't do that on Pulsar units.

After trying several different spotters from various manufacturers and an array of models, I settled on the XQ38f. It does the job with no difficulty...spotting quarry which I’m going to shoot at further away than I’m able to shoot.
Couldn’t really ask for more...

E3max and E3Pro 3.5 - 5 hrs

Drop an IPS14 into a Helion and it will run for 24hrs powered on and can be swapped in seconds if required.

What about turnaround time, i.e. the time a professional user might have to do without the unit whilst it is away (presumably) to have a replacement battery fitted?

I ordered one of the new Axion XM30S units (and paid a £500 deposit) at the start of November, 4 months ago.
No fault of the retailer or of the importer (Thomas Jacks), but I'm still waiting...
Every month I'm told that deliveries are expected 'this month'. I've been told that a delivery is expected 'in March', but the retailer has been told that they are likely to receive only a fraction of the number that they ordered, and therefore there's a very strong possibility that I still won't get my Axion this month, even if deliveries do finally start.
I've considered getting a Helion instead (and was offered a very good deal on an XQ38F by the retailer who is selling me the Axion), but I wanted a unit that would fit in my jacket pocket.
I contacted Pulsar last month and was basically told that it wasn't their problem. If I treated my customers like that then I'd be out of business in a matter of weeks
I'm now reluctant to give Pulsar my business, but there doesn't seem to be any other comparable options (in terms of price, size and capabilities) out there.
Any suggestions?
I too committed and paid my deposit back in October and have similarly grown infuriated with Pulsar’s lack of honesty in providing reliable delivery information - it’s not the fault of the uk suppliers (Scott County in my case) but I do think Thomas Jacks could/should have used their influence as the sole UK distributor to get better updates. Having sold my old Pulsar after returning from a week on Arran I’ve been without a spotter ever since - however, I do also have an XM38 Thermion so in frustration I took that off my Sako 75 and have been using it as a spotter since November. Not ideal, but the performance of the 12micron sensor has convinced me it was still better to wait out for the XM30S’ arrival. I tried briefly a XM22 Key but compared to the Thermion the performance was crap - much poorer apparent detection range and a terrible viewer. As the sensor is the same, it has convinced me that the effort in upgrading the XM30S display is probably a wise investment so has tempered my frustration driving me down the XQ38F route (the extra cost doesn’t help either) - I too also want a compact unit that doesn’t get in the way whilst using binos and sticks and whilst the Breach seemed an ideal alternative, it was too much extra for me. I too have heard that it is literally only weeks away so will sit on my hands as the roe doe season comes to an end but if it’s not there for the start of roe bucks, that may be a game changer. The right of arc worry in my mind is that no sooner that the XM30S does get released, Pulsar will introduce a new 12micron version of the Helion:mad:

I do hate being part of this technology “arms race” - years ago I spent a fortune constantly upgrading my PCs, then smartphones. Every few months brings a new tech “advantage” and yesterday’s best is now average or worse. Sadly, cash is not as freely now as it was so I like many have to cut my cloth better and I can no longer chop and change at will, bearing the inevitable losses. Sad that this facet of today’s life has crept into stalking, a recreational pastime that gives me so much. Sadly, and especially for woodland fallow stalking, thermal is essential if cull plans are to be achieved and in bringing on new trainees also, thermal increases the chances of making every outing reliably successful.

Fingers crossed for good news in the new few weeks.........

I must have items like thermals, torches and other electrical items that have batteries that can be swapped in seconds. I have not got time to wait on a unit to charge up and therefore be out of action for that period. Nor do i want equipment where an external power pack is the option because wires etc are a pita. Last night i was going to head out with the ward 800 which should have been ready to go. However I discovered that when i put the rifle away in the gun cabinet i must have knocked the ward switch on so the unit needed plugged into the wall for hours.

you need the small cap with the top punched out modification, prevents that from happening.

Get your money back and try Toby at Macleod’s of Tain or Calum at precision rifle services. Fantastic service from both!!

cut a circle out of a soft drinks bottle top just big enough to go over the switch on the ward, glue in place, no more knocked on ward switch.........

that said I store mine in a flight case with IR, batteries, rangefinder and torch mount; no protection on the on switch and never have issues with an accidental discharge

Has anybody out there tried the recently launched Nightpearl thermal monoculars, they are being sold by Nightsight as a intro to the thmal market here in the UK ?
