Thermal Madness

Been considering a new thermal - I have a decent set of Habroks but found the 4x base mag made the field of view quite limiting - a friend lent me their 35mm Pulsar unit for a stalk.
very nice - big wide FoV but also good resolution and detail - Most importantly the depth of field seemed way better than anything I'd used previously - you didn't have to fiddle with the focus all the time everything between 30 and 90m was decently sharp

Oooh says I "I'll keep an eye out for a deal on a similar unit on SD"

quick rummage on the internet and a bit of a head scratch Pulsar do 4 thermals with 35mm lenses and very similar names
which one was i using? which is the good one? etc

Hik also have 2 lines with 3 lens sizes and some in the new V2 and others not everything from £300 to 2.5k
which is the one that's about the same as the pulsar unit?
that's before you get to other manufacturers

So I tried to put some order on it with a spreadsheet and have only succeeded in wasting a morning

some of you may find this useful or not up to you -

if you spot anything missing or wrong, well done you, I really don't need to know

Wow!
I take it that you have had a lot of very heavy rain the last week or two?

Would it have been easier to ask the person who let you borrow theirs 😅 😅 Nice spreadsheet though lol

Habroks have changed the game for me I’ve got the 35mm pro the day vision isn’t as good as glass but I’ve got a ZEISS v8 on the top of my rifle and if it’s something of interest the rifles on the sticks ready to go so I use that for identification and if it is what I want it to be the cross hairs are somewhere close!

I was stalking against a tall bank where deer could be anywhere and really noticed the small Field of View having to scan across and up and down. Vs. a wider field taking it in much quicker

I do like the habroks for the enhanced optical which is incredible in the dusk and the image stabilisation is magic but i just can't work out why you can't get a lower base magnification in them. Something about physics I'm sure, but very annoying anyway

Magnification in an NV/ thermal is mainly down the physical size of the sensor and the focal length of the objective lens, where small sensors and/or long focal length lenses result in higher magnifications.
Since the manufacturer decides both sensor and the lens to be used - you're stuck with whatever they think is best for their sales :)
Cheers

Fairly new to the market, but has anyone had any experience with the new Pulsar Oryx LRF XG35? Like the OP I’m in the market for a thermal…..

Cheers,
