Thermal scopes….

I just looked up my license and you’re right, it says no thermal scope, that hadn’t even crossed my mind that you couldn’t use them. Lucky iv not just splashed out on one then 😬. Thanks for bringing that up.Does anyone know why?

Going to have a decent look in to sorting this pard out as it defiantly used to be alot clearer than it is now and I’m sure the weather hasn’t changed that much. I mean the first winter I had it I must have shot 50+ with it but at this rate I’ll be lucky to get 10 this winter. Thanks very much
Just a lot of "old hat" regulations/policies that need updating into the modern world.

If I were you I'd take Clive up on his offer. He's been helpful to me in the past amd he knows his stuff.

That looks like a nice.mintjac buck at the end.
All wild animals ar wonderful, but fallow are also a curse. I don't have ground with them on now, but when I did they drove me to distraction. I didn't apply for a night shooting licence because thermal wasn't yet a thing, and the terrain very much reduced chances of finding an animal that ran. With today's thermal gear I would be giving that position a serious rethink.

Edit: just seen Stephen's post re. the "best practice". I think that needs to change. Perhaps a rethink is on the cards now Scotland has taken a step in that direction.
Still possible to shoot under NV then follow up with thermal, I suppose.

If you are issued a licence you have to follow the terms of that licence, otherwise you are breaking the law. There isn't any wiggle room. It says quite clearly you cannot use a thermal sight. NV and thermal is really new to me but to be honest what I have seen, I would prefer a thermal scope to Night Vision, god knows why they differentiate but that's the rules for now. There's lots of stuff I don't agree with in the deer act etc - but I obviously comply with.

Personally I would get rid of the deer act all together but that's a different discussion.
Agreed…they ought to scrap season dates on fallow, they’re a major pest in our area, completely out of control with no predators, not enough control, and too many safe havens on un shot ground for them to hide…and breed. You would think NE would make It a bit easier for those willing to cull at night , the damage to woodland and crops is horrendous.…I thought we’re meant to be protecting our trees!

It isn’t that easy to get a night licence, and its rediculous having to submit details of what you’ve shot, like most stuff these days , paperwork over rules practicality. perhaps the people making the rules ought to get out and see the herds of 100+ in one field then they might be abit more practical about the problem, there is no way that its possible to make them go extinct in this Stone Age, and none of us would want that, i actually really love seeing them in groups of two or three (like the roe are in our area) just not 100+ on a crop of maize! Afraid to say the problem is only going to get worse unless the deer act changes.

I don’t quite understand why you can’t use thermal, I know ID might be less accurate, but even if you could just use it when buck & doe season open. Surely it’s actually safer than just ir.… anyone know why this is?.

Apologies if some of you don’t agree with me, I expect that, it’s just my opinion, but some species just don’t need the protection that they get. I won’t start on badgers!

rant over.
