Looks like a chunk of one of the lands broken off - how?
Presumably you can have the barrel shortened slightly, screw cut redone & then recrowned.

its pitted like that as far down as i can see (first 25mm) or so. no idea what it looks like beyond that as haven't got a bore scope.

The rifle is new to me. What do you reckon the chances of that shooting ok are?

John

Stainless steel barrels used for many thousands of rounds in Bisley style target comps can suffer from fire crazing where the lands by the leade develop cracking. When mine did it still shot well but I lost confidence and rebarreled.

Have you shot it?, is it accurate?, I would personally have it bore scoped full length by someone who knows what they are looking at & go from there, maybe just a cut & crown.

I haven'tshot it yet. I'm contemplating just scrapping it before i waste a load of effort and money trying to get it to shoot. Feel like a massive mug at the moment for having bought a gun on trust.

its the muzzle thats pitted, haven't been able to have a look at the throat yet. I had a throat pitted hornet that shot stunning but only after Richard pope fettled the crown.

Got to be worth giving an aggressive clean/polish with JB Bore Compound and then shoot a few groups.

You'll feel no more a mug if it turns out to be a tac driver!

Give it a good clean then take it out and shoot it, if you just rebarrel it you really are a
" mug with more money than sense"

If it still shoots well with or without the mod I still would have it sorted out , my 223 shoot very well with a damaged crown when I got it but I still had it redone just as it looked shagged /damaged and gas burnt this was due to the mod being on and not removed for cleaning just as yours looks .

i would say the moderator was left on for an extended period,go shoot the rifle i am sure it will group well enough for your stalking needs.

Thats what it looks like to me but the guy swears blind it was stored off and cleaned regularly. The bolt was also scored i asked how that had happened and he said he he never removes the bolt iasked how he cleaned it then???????? etc

Do you like the rest of the rifle?
If so why chuck it away, just because your tyres wear out on your truck you don't throw it away you change the tyres!

You might even end up with a re-barrelled rifle better than the day it was manufactured.

In hindsight and fairness to the Op' I fully understand his disappointment even if the rifle does still shoot well.

No one likes to be sold something they would not dream of trying to similerly dispose of to a fellow shooter.

I think everyone visiting / reading this thread has had this thought.

By way of update. Took it out in the week and put half a box winnies and a few homeloads. Seems to shoot abot 0.5-0.6 so can't really complain just wonder what it would have been like if not abused?? anyway will keep it for while then maybe use it as a donor.

Thanks for all the help
John
