Tikka extractor repair

My old tikka m65 still extracts and ejection plunger is nice and firm to depress. However it has started dumping rounds in the mag where it used to eject them firmly 2ft sideways. No changes to height of optics or fitting rail/other. The extractor is still under spring tension, but sticks out a bit over the edge of the bolt rim, I can’t recall if it always did that.

I’ve cleaned it properly, no need to revisit that.

Anyone care to recommend a gunsmith who could fix this properly? Not any around here I’d want trying to have a go at it. Most I’ve seen have said it’s so old no parts are available - clearly a good smith doesn’t need factory parts to fix a roll pin and/or spring! 😂 says something about why I’m looking for a ‘good’ smith

It’s likely the extractor claw, over time (considerable time ) has become worn on the lower face which lips over the case rim

The extractors are hardened and I don’t believe there is a replacement available unless someone has new spares from years ago available

William Wadenstein in Finland May have nee parts

However, of the extractor was removed andExamined one may be able to see if the edge is over 90 degrees (worn)

It may be possible to re dress with a diamond file with care

If the plunger is functional then the extractor is letting go early and wear is the root cause

Odd thing is, despite age, rifle has not done 500 rounds!
 
And should it be sticking out over the face rim like that? Presumably so or it would just fall out if pin was broken

Yes , the M55/M65 have extended extractors

Has it been rebarrelled or has it simply not been used

It could be a build up of detritus under the extractor claw

Just not been used much at all. Never rebarelled, all original. Interestingly, Norma ejected beautifully, then went to Sako which dropped in the mag well, then tried sellier and Bellot, which ejects very sloppy.

Could it simply be brass quality issues? Haven’t got any Norma left to try
 
Tikka 55/65 ejector/extractor springs are notorious for wearing out (i.e. not designed correclty, or made from inferior materials). The balance needs to be "just right", and if aftermarket rail is fitted (as hinted) it might make the "operational window" narrower.

Wili Wadstein / Finn Enterprise was accused of serious firearms law breaches year or two ago. That doesn't necessarily mean they broke the law, some officials here in Finland have their own agenda. But the website seems not to be up yet, they do sell "cold steel" so I think their RFD license might not be effective at the moment.

I've not heard Finn Enterprise to be regarded as a source of Tikka parts. There surely are some floating around, but experience from few recent years tells that anything older than Tikka T3 it's a potshot if you find parts or not. Regarding the springs, any competent smith should be able to measure wire thickness, amount of coils, and make replacement from spring steel wire (hopefully better quality than Tikka original).
 
I know that an aftermarket extractor fitment is offered as a upgrade in Australia.
They offer what is called and M16 extractor. I don't really know what it is but the same can probably done for the Model M65 bolt if there is no other remedy
 
"M16 extractor" or "Sako extractor" is usual upgrade for Rem 700 based rifles that have the inconcievable O shaped spring/extractor combo.

So Tikka M65 already has this kind of extractor (claw that has inward pressure) although the spring system differs from M16 / AR-15. Since M16 style can be fitted in quite slim M16 bolt, I'd say it can also be fitted to Tikka bolt. Obviously the radius on extractor should be changed to accommodate larger boltface (or use AR-10 extractor but they're scarce and more expensive).

If there in fact is aftermarket rail, I'd first try removing it is possible. That would give idea how large the "operational window" for ejection is. As second step, I'd try to find someone to make new springs for both extractor and ejector (and tune them until ejection is fine). If those do not work, I'd try to check newer model Tikkas, Sakos and even other claw type extractor rifles, to find design that is available as spare parts and can be fitted (dimensions will fit i.e. the new extractor is at least as big as current, and there's nothing blocking the alterations to bolt).

Yeah just noticed that. I think I’ll try having a stronger spring under the extractor fitted, then if not working, have the extractor filed.

Failing that, time to retire..but I will miss that trigger! Best trigger I’ve ever had!..and of course, the fact it was the old man’s rifle.

Could always purchase another m series used rifle and keep it just for parts as spare parts and use the extractor assuming it works well still
