Trophy Hunting

OK. So my netsuke and okimono and ivory handled old knives collections now worthless

My Holland royale and small gauge best guns now worthless

My first edition Roland Ward books 100-150 years old now worthless?
Your old ivory may need CITES certification depending on where you sell it as it stands.
Your lovely old Holland will sell well in the USA as will your small bores, specialised game guns like old SXS‘s aren’t much in demand by the younger generation.
Your first edition remains what it is, a first edition.

I think what is needed is plain numbers I.e. x amount for the conservation budget p.a made up of a.goverment funds, b.donations, c.photo safaris, d.hunting

It's hard to argue with black and white numbers. Once people can see how much would be removed from the conservation budget I'm sure many would come around

This bill originated in a desire to keep Mrs Borris and Zac Goldsmith happy as part of being the greenest Government ever. Its generated a good debate on SD and even the BBC is starting to be more objective on the topic.

I would counter with what’s the morality of raising and slaughtering billions of chickens annually. We are a species that predates on other species. Morality only comes in if you don’t believe humans should kill any other species. Frankly the vegetarian/vegan is massively over represented amongst the political elite.
The money generated from the chickens makes trophy hunting less than small change!

Fact or fiction-
I am being told that there may be a 40 % import tax placed on hunting taxidermy coming into the U.K.?

Any one seen anything official on this other then hearsay and Bob told me in the pub last night 👍

I dont know a lot about trophy hunting so watched some stuff on You Tube about African 'hunting' for elephants, zebra, hippo, crocodile and bizzarley giraffes using rifles and bows and have to say I dont see the point, especially a giraffe with a bow.

I can understand shooting antelope etc. for food but the rest is beyond me other than amusing brainless Amercians with too much money and thought the bow hunting both cruel and pointless.

If a trophy hunting/import ban stops this then it can only be good news.

I don’t believe you can sell any ivory now.

I thought about selling in US but don’t know how much of a faff it is to export

Watch some more on the benefits to conservation and local communities, it a lot bigger picture than the top ten hits from a quick Google search 👍

Without those brainless Americans with too much money there'd be no funding for conservation in many areas, and no funding for anti-poaching patrols etc, so the wildlife would steadily be wiped out and replaced with cattle ranching. As long as providing hunting opportunities remains more lucrative than farming cattle, the wildlife will be protected and will flourish.
So a real own goal for our government trying to be seen to be green.

Whatever is killed will be eaten.

'Amusing brainless Americans" - is unhelpful and pejorative language, that does not advance the debate one way or the other.

I am not a bow hunter and have absolutely no desire to become one. I do however appreciate that others will feel differently and, (provided of course it is done ethically) I have no issue with it.

It won't.

Jesus there's some comments on here from some people who have no idea how this all works.
Some stupid remarks from some uneducated people.
That unfortunately is the problem with a public forum, plenty of people with differing opinions to your own!

Their not uneducated, they have a different opinions like myself, you don’t have to like it, but as one of the site owners you have to lump it.

I’d be willing to bet that 90% of people for this ban aren’t even aware of these terms. They just don’t like any idea of folk going to Africa to hunt.
I would imagine it's closer to 99%.

However the measuring organisations out there that serve the hunting community act as an encouragement to those who see having their names printed on a list as some kind of validation of their prowess. It is clear that there is, amongst those who hunt, a significant proportion for whom shooting trophies is a key motivation. If it's not a medal, they're not interested.

IMHO it is this quest to shoot animals that attract more points that has, sadly, contributed in at least some measure to the imposition of this ban.

I think it’s a case of each to their own. I’ve got a few ‘medal’ deer over time but would be embarrassed to show them off. Frankly, I get just as excited for hinds or does. But it’s interesting to know through a scoring system how a deer on a home patch compares with other / better parts of the country.

The only stalking in the uk that really gets knocked is when people hear of the prices paid for the big stags down south that are charged by the point. It’s otherwise thankfully a fairly accepted concept here that deer need controlled and the “trophy” side of it doesn’t really draw any interest.
