Turn in dovetail scope ring fit

How stiff should the front ring be to turn in? I’ve seen reference to a bespoke wrench so presumably quite tight? My s/h pair of rings are correct for the bases, but turn in with only a whisper of finger pressure. I’m wondering if the ring feet are worn from previous use? They appear to be, a little. Should they be a very tight fit?

There should be far more resistance than you describe. I assume they are the Leupold rings you bought on what, if memory serves, were Burris bases? Certainly when I have used them I've used a wooden dowel to turn such rings into the bases.

My Leupolds were very stiff. They recommend a little grease. I used a vice to turn them in.

Hi Marv, yes, that’s right. The bases are Redfield I think, and the original (30mm) rings are definitely redfield I now know. Either way it’s the redfield/burris/Leupold generic turn in system but this Leupold ring foot seems particularly loose. Useful reference to know they should be much stiffer- better I know that now than later!

Try tapping the side of the dovetail with a small hammer when the ring lower dovetail is rested onto an anvil as is found on many vices, it may lift/push the upper surface a little higher to tighten the fit.

I assume he means my tapping the sides of the dovetail you will make the dovetail a little taller and therefore a tighter fit. Your basically squashing the metal to change the shape, doing it with little taps means you ca go bit by bit. You can bring a shotgun back on face in the same way by peeninig the hook. I would start at the middle of the dovetail and work out to swell the dovetail without changing the outer profile.
