UK Driven Boar

I was in my local RFD earlier picking up my new 308 this afternoon and we were chatting driven boar. That’s what I’ve got the straight pull for mainly. The other customer in the shop was telling of an adventure he’d had shooting driven boar in Shropshire. I hadn’t realised that was even possible so quizzed him and he said he’d give me a number. Conversation drifted, as it does, and I let him go without getting the number. Does anyone here know of contacts that might provide such opportunities? He did say it was expensive but I’d imagine no more so than air fares and hunting licences on the continent

I think there's a place towards Wrexham and Chester that has some penned boar, as for driven or any boar at all in Shropshire, not that I've heard.

I would be really surprised if there was much suitable land anywhere in the UK for driven boar (or deer).

- You would need clear arcs of fire outward, and providing those in the UK, where we have public footpaths, is incredibly hard.
In France, on the other hand, they just put up signs warning of shooting, and (more or less) accept the consequences.

- To add to the problem, my experience in France, where a good friend runs a shoot, is that you need quite a density of guns to avoid the boar finding gaps and escaping. It’s not as tight as driven pheasant, but you need a lot of guns for, say, 0.5km square wood - probably nearer 20 than 15. And a similar number of beaters and dogs.

I would not hold my breath.

Croatia my favourite place for boar hunting. Germany is very good too and great to watch the Deutscher Drahthaar's work. Turkey has the biggest pigs and is truly wild up in the mountains.

Several years ago Peter Carr did organise driven Boar in a part of SW Scotland but was soon stopped due to the way it was run.
Apparently pigs were kept in a certain area and fed for a while and then released to be pushed towards standing guns.
It was covered in depth by an article in the times, titled 'Big Guns Return to Scotland'
Some pigs actually ran/walked towards some of the guns expecting to be fed.

I was quoted e2000 to shoot one pig - under a lamp- by an outfit in Antalya just before convid locked us down. It would probably have been a big pig but I passed on it. No sport. 2k euros just to pull a trigger - they were having a laugh!

The chap you were talking to was probably the same fellow who always headshoots foxes at 700 yds....
If the truth be known, he was only in the shop to buy airgun pellets.

Not boar, but I’m surprised that driving muntjac hasn’t taken off as a legitimate control technique.
I was thinking shotguns rather than rifles, similar to fox drives.

Not my Turkey experience at all. For me 5 days hunting less than 3 k no trophy fees and all wild driven, had 14 personally and saw 300 + myself so really enjoyed my experience. You need to shop more wisely!!

I met Pete in Ireland,he gave me a few hundred quid to write an article for his mag....his organising was 'ordinary' lol.

For me 5 days hunting less than 3 k no trophy fees

As I posted yesterday my mate is among them for the price of his fuel from home.

Q: Have seen more pigs than roos....****ing everywhere. I just walk straight past them.

I bet it would surprise u just how long ago that would be, been stopped for a good while now.
I was working next to it a few years ago and boundry fences completely f@@ked but u could still see the raised shooting positions,

No as far as i know never had driven boar there, dunno if he'd even shoot that many on his place and don't think he'd be in it that long after they 'escaped' and surrounded by woods so just spread out happily living wild

Sometime back there was an infamous character who claimed that he had organised the first driven Wild Boar event since medieval times If I remember rightly it was on an estate called Carminnows?
Fenced all the same, and no doubt whatever you were told, I would hazard a guess its a long dogs tail in my opinion.
