Evening Lads,

This may have been touched on in the past but if anyone can advise on the variation question I’d really appreciate it.

So I’m selling I firearm and moderator tomorrow and wanting to replace it with a different calibre firearm with the appropriate moderator so hopefully this 1 is simple.

I also have 2 moderator slots on my license that I have no use for, my question is can i swap a moderator slot for a firearm as a 1 fo 1 variation?

Thanks in advance 🙏

The first one would appear to be a straight forward one for one.
The second all I can tell you is I have done this previously with Lancs. The only way to be sure is either apply or ask FLD/FEO
Unfortunately they have a tendency to pick and choose when/if they follow HOG. Although in theory a moderator is considered a firearm, in practice you’ve two chances.

It’s probably easier getting through to Donald trump than our local firearms Dept, I’m sure they watch it ring and play swan lake to cheese us off

Hi mate,

Cheers for sharing your experience, my only thought was if they had a problem with swapping the mod for a firearm I’m sure they would email or drop me a call. Worst case £49 for a full variation 😜👌

Yes you do and yes you can. I have done this recently. Remember, the moderator is a “firearm” 🤷🏼‍♂️

As others have said, yes you can swap a mod slot for a firearm, but you still need good reason for the additional firearm. The existing good reason for the current moderator is unlikely to be the same for a rifle. The second moderator slot may be perfectly fine for an additional moderator for the new rifle.

The swapping out of moderators for rifles is a 2 part question, in theory you are not increasing the number of "firearms" on your FAC so the cost side should be zero as it's a 1 for 1.

As has just be mentioned, you may be questioned on your "good reason" for the 2 "replacement" rifles as your moderators were for the reduction of noise/nuisance when shooting, that's good reason but that doesn't cover your "new" rifles, so if you now want to take up a new discipline such as "target shooting" or setting up a new rifle for "night shooting of quarry" then those would be examples of good reason.

The decision will come down to your FEO in your constabulary, given that moderators are about to come off ticket to reduce workload (and numbers of "firearms" in circulation) It may be that this type of variation is going to be actively discouraged.

Cheers Spike,

It’s all target shooting that I do, I’m thinking of using the moderator slot for a firearm before they roll it out mandatory where they don’t need to be specific slots on your license as the current rules as uve stated. I suppose it’s down to the individual force,

Think it’s worth a shot, worst case I have to pay £49 if the don’t allow it.

Appreciate ur advice buddy 👌

Your selling a rifle and moderator. So you can put in for a one for one variation. If you don't need the two moderator slots. Then ask them to remove them for your fac.

He did say he didn't need them. Read his post.
Yes, I know.
I read that as he has no use for two additional moderators.
Which is why he's now asking whether he can swap a mod slot for a rifle slot. (Which he can, by doing a 1-4-1).
If he didn't have an "empty" slot, he'd have to pay for a variation. However, a 1-4-1 is free. Hence the reason why an "empty" slot is a useful thing to have.
So it would be foolish for anyone to ask to have "empty" slots removed from their FAC, even if they don't have a current use for them.

Was recently told by police Scotland you can’t swap a mod for a rifle, and if changing calibres or from RF to CF or action type, 1:1 free variation does not apply.
Perhaps police Scotland ought to read the rules?
Any variation that doesn't increase the total number of firearms held is a 1-4-1 (ie, free).
A mod is (currently) considered to be a firearm, so can be swapped for another firearm FOC.

It’s like Lancs putting a time limit on the gap between disposal and 1 for 1. I challenged that by asking for the actual change of legislation that allowed their charge.

I'm guessing they backed down then? Once you'd put it in writing and they had to reply?
