New calibre/variation require a FEO visit?

On my FAC I currently have two .22LR, two .223 and one 6.5 Creed. I think I am correct in thinking that if I were to add a .308 it would require me to have a visit from the FEO or can I justify it online when i apply for the variation and that would be it? I am also wanting to swap one of my .22LR spaces for a 17HMR, same question goes for this, would that require an FEO visit? I fall under West Mercia.

Apply online and give enough information as to why you need the 308. If its an additional rifle rather a one for one you might need to give a bit more.

Think of other end - give sufficient info so that they can make the decision without them having to ask further questions.

What do you mean by this?

I don't think there is a standard approach across all police forces. I applied for a variation for a 6.5 creedmor and already had a 6.5x55 my justification was I wanted a lighter stalking set up and it was not available in 6.5x55. No problem but I'm not in west mercia and I never had an FEO visit.

When I applied for a variation to add a .303 and ammunition with police Scotland I just said it was for Target shooting, they though about it for 3 weeks and then just sent my ticket back with the slot added in. Didn't even get a phonecall.

And yet when I added a second cabinet next to my original Brattonsound they were around to my house faster then a whippet up a drainpipe.. so there is no guarantee..

This is going to be my justification as well. I have a 6.5 creedmoor which i have set up for long range varminting on one of the farms i do pest control for but it is far too heavy to lug round the woods. Wanted to add a .308 so i could get a lightweight setup to help with the deer control on the farm. West Mercia are already aware that i control both deer and foxes on the land so hoping that simplifies it a bit rather than saying I have new land.

Wonder if saying it was for target shooting made things easier for them to decide, are you a member of a club?

I think West Mercia may have telephones in these modern times. It hardly justifies a visit and the FEO should be able to satisfy any concerns they may have about your application over the phone if they are working wisely.

You'd like to think so. Although when I had my .223 added he came round and interviewed me. Although that could have been because it was my first centrefire.

Never had an FEO visit when adding / changing calibres on my licence.
Afaik, I have only ever had 2 visits - one for my first application and one when I moved house into Hertfordshire.
My FEO has come out shooting with me tho, but I don’t think that counts!!

the overall number of shotguns + firearms may push you into the need for enhanced security - alarms etc - depending on how your FEO considers it

There's no need to overcomplicate these things. If they want more information from you, or want to come and see you, they'll ask. Otherwise, just type "shooting of deer and any other lawful quarry" in the box. If you've already established that as a good reason for your other rifles, they're unlikely to give it a second glance.

Not West Mercia, but put in variation for 1st CF (243) with good reason being deer and fox. Passed DSC 1 since cert granted. Quick call from FEO and all okayed verbally. No visit required.
