that is some tongue on paddy
what sort of work is he used for ?
please dont tell me you use him for pulling carts of stone of that beach, as if you are, any chance of a couple of bags , could do with a water feature
whats his breeding if you don't mind me asking

Stone

as he was only 1 year old last week i havent started any proper gun dog training yet only the normal retrieving and basic skills.
a gun dog trainer lives very near me and suggested i didnt start formal training untill about 18 months old.
As you can burn dogs out too soon apparently.

that tongue of his usually ends up in my ear !!!! whenever he get the chance.

his breeding comes from a long line of FTCH (field trials champions).

hi xim
not sure which area you are from? or how much experience you hav at training
who is the trainer and does he do any group training classes as this may be a good way to socialise and learn a few new tricks as cockers can some times be a handfull from the ones i hav dealt with

Stone,

You are spot on there, when training a cocker you need a good sense of humour. They are cheeky little buggers.

I remember some time ago now training Pep, some days it was a joy, then other days it was like training a circus act. I would get him to sit and stay, then he would drop to his stomach and slowly crawl towards me with those deep brown eyes starring at me, well how can you bollock that look?

When I first introduced Pep to deer I was pleasantly surprised. At first he wanted to hunt with his nose to the ground constantly. After a while he learnt to stay to heal and every time I stopped he would sit, sometimes with a gentle sssssss.

His first experience at the bottom of high seat was yet another circus act as he tried ever so hard to climb up to me. After a couple of outings he soon realised he just has to sit and wait. Now he will roll up and go to sleep.

It was not a smooth transition to the Deer, we have had laughter and frustrations along the way. He is getting on a bit now and his ability to mark birds down at a distance is beginning to fail him, however he has still got a very good keen nose. He loves the Deer, for a small dog he has the heart of a Lion, he has tried to retrieve every Deer that he has found. He will always return with pins and blood showing.

Where I stalk you need a dog, when the animal drops and you mark the area it is still Nye on impossible to walk to the area and see it laying there, the ground is undulating and rough, that’s where the dog comes into its own. Personally I do not like to stalk without my dog, or without a dog on the area. I suppose I am lucky as we all have dogs where I stalk. Various breeds but they are all as good as each other.

Here is 'Scrap',and, she is going to be my deer dog.I don't think you could get a better nose on a dog(apart from my whippet)if you tried, whether she will make the grade I am unsure,as she can be a little bit impatient. She has only been out once so far, and,it was an evening of Does,so,the jury is still out, but, she did behave herself that evening,so.......who knows.......................Martin.

i used to stalk with a fella down by dunkerswell and his chosen deer dog was a jack
each dog has it's own attributes
wot suits one may not suit another , good luck with scrap, let us know how she gets on

I have been using my 13 year old chocolate Lab for all my tracking needs, but I am in the process of training a yellow Lab pup to take her place.

(I had been trying to find a Bavarian/Havarian pup here in the US, but I gave up and bought another Lab.)

a more recent photo of my so so stupid but even more so love-able "Paddy"

i find it difficult to maintain a strict gundog regime as the more family pet regime overides any discipline.... :O :-P
great fun either way, a total joy regardless of his skills.

Well chaps
no photos as yet but i pick up my large munsterlander pup in September 5 weeks old at present , a bitch , I am gonna call her FREYA!
hope to present her at the deer tracking day on Stones training day just to familiarize and get a few coos!! if I can get a space!!! so for those of you who said you would come please let Stone know, and for those who cant!!! doubly let Stone know, as I am seeking a place .
Regards Trapper
