What would you do?

Are the tusks the right way around?

don’t start Tim. I have my doubts there too but can’t be sure.

don't name and shame the craftsman / woman who for what i see has done a good job, and a lot of hard work has gone into it, they have give you a refund, and are now properly out of pocket, money/time wise.

i cant speak for everyone, but i very much doubt 99.99% people that see it, will even notice anything wrong? i didn't.

most people that don't shoot will say it looks discussing anyway, ''but screw them''

cracking buck by the way

Spot the difference!

this is a 230 CIC gold medal shot by one of my clients, mounted by the guy I use.

Tusks are certainly wrong. To my eye taxidermists very rarely get it just right that's why I just do skulls now. Lesson learnt on that one

im inclined to agree. I sent the taxidermist an email on Monday expressing that thought and asked how they were set so I could see about getting them swapped over and or possibly just get the whole bloody lot remounted. She’s chosen (disappointingly but probably not surprisingly) not to respond. As you say, lesson learned. Glad it wasn’t a monster stag of a lifetime, shan’t be going back that’s for sure.

I was told once to always use a local taxidermist to the area as they will be more familiar with the species. For example a British taxidermist doing a chamois often won't be as good as a European taxidermist. I certainly find this to be the case when iam drawing. As you've said you won't be returning regardless.

her portfolio showed a fantastic example of a buck, which was why I went there, and she’s not new to the scene or anything, well established. But with hindsight, she doesn’t have any updated pictures of her work, they have been the same for a decade, but not everyone spends hours updating websites, especially self employed 1 person operations.....seeing the difference in the two makes me suspicious now. But I do know others who have had good work done by her, further adding to the mystery.

This is a recent one on her Facebook page, from June, no pink paint in the nostrils, tusks look right, I’d be over the moon with that mount, but the two look to be done by totally different people!!

Ah well. Gave her a chance to be a grown up, but she’s chosen to go and be silly, so, Claire Fowler, freedom taxidermy, Dorset. Well done for screwing up my mount so spectacularly.... congratulations.

Get Malc or someone to get you a new cape, send the whole lot to a taxidermist, and get them to remount it. Then, send her the bill, with a time a limit. Pursue via Small Claims if she resists.

One has to wonder if a trainee had done yours?

i have heard nothing but good things about her work to be honest, that’s before this abomination I hasten to add.

Absolutely nothing to do with the area or country you’re from, thinking like that you’d expect the african taxidermist to be the best at african mounts when in fact there the worst .

As above. There are some good taxidermists in Africa, mostly South Africa. However generally most of the work is done by local people who are paid pennies a day to work. As for having any work done local, because the locals know better, is rubbish. Many use the same manakins from the same suppliers.

Agreed. I advise all our clients to get their taxidermy done back in their home country. Although there are a few very good ones, African taxidermy studios are generally run like factories. Loving artistry from a craftsman it ain't...

Has she subbed the work out to another taxidermist? Or as said above .has a trainee done it??
