Where to aim for neck shots

I’m ‘only’ a recreational stalker but can completely understand where you’re coming from & the need to present clean carcasses to game dealers & so on.
I can see there may be a change in how I shoot coming on….

I do a lot of night contracting so it’s often easier to aim for the eyes, but head shots can be extremely good, I head shoot about 100 deer a year and maybe 2 would need the knife after and that’s me using a 6.5 and my 22-250. But it’s all about how steady you are, I won’t head shoot past 250m as a rule
Wow head shooting at 250m I mean clearly you’re an expert but still I’ve never met anyone who could 100% of the time hit a deer brain sized object at 250m. But hey ho what do I know… you can do it in the dark?!

i'm definitely not an expert, i still have alot of learning to do but i just spend too much time practicing, i would only stretch it that far if it was a still night but don't get me wrong i still miss some. i shoot about 2000 rounds a year at steel because its what i enjoy, i'm only 17 so i have a fair bit of free time ahah. i wish you could post videos on hear because i quite often film them through my scope.

Ha ha I’ll bet by the time you 50 you won’t dream of headshots at 250m but at 17 anything seems possible! Good luck mate

when i'm out on a recreational stock i rarely head shoot the main reason is at night i can see the reflection of there eyes in the lamp so it makes it easier and you know they don't run anywhere so there easier to find but i think a shoulder is still the best shot to take.

ha ha your probably right, the the head shot record so far is a fox at 420m. but i love long range shooting and hope when im older im still at it. i cant send the video of the fox on here but thats a screenshot just before the bullet was sent.

Neck shot, shoulder shot practice is key if you’re not an everyday experience stalker.
Not just practice at range, practice in the field.

depends most of all on the presentation of the beast . you can start at the atlas joint and work down . I always like to edge on a bit high or a bit low getting the job done . biggest risk on high neck shots is the beast moving just as you commit on the trigger breaking - try and edge your bet on trajectory also
Generally i dont do neck shots unless its all i am going to get or night culling or the thing is laid down in high grass chewing the cud
Any shot can go wrong for many reasons from a loose mount a knock or an un-noticed or miss called wind . Its just there is more to go wrong when you shoot for smaller kill zones

At that distance, and at night, take it from me, you might have thought you missed, but there is a chance with the recoil and at night there is a deer running off with it's jaw blown off, I couldn't live with that thought or a member of the public coming across it.
Sorry if this is coming across as 'preachy', but I have been there, I will always remember it, very early on in my deer stalking career 30 years ago, I have never attempted to head shoot since then, and it's in my contract that any clients I take out shooting don't head shoot, I have had one client who ignored me, he has never been invited back.
But hey, that's just me, what do I know.

If that's a true representation of what you saw through your scope how can you aim at the head ? All I can see is a dark blob.

Because that was just its head, the body was behind a lump of heather, no matter how much I barked it wouldn’t stand up.

It’s a very good point, I have a shot cam that a review the footage from and I always check the spot of with a dog just in case. Touch wood but I’ve only had it happen once and the deer was found by the dog.

Here a video of the fox, I completely understand if you guys think I’m pushing my ability but I work in very large clearfells and my avarage shot during the day is between 300 to 800m because often I can’t get much closer and there all through the shoulder. It is quite remarkable with the technology today how accurate you can be at long range.

If I was to wait for a H&L shot during the summer I’d shoot very few deer due to height of cover. Most of the ground I’m on because numbers need reduced so don’t usually have the luxury letting them go for another day, so whatever safe shot (and whatever I consider ethical) presents is the one I go for. Most are shot under 80m with the majority within 50. I had a couple of low neck shot animals with damaged saddles last year so now opt for high neck or head - 90% of the time facing on or away. Would still take the low neck if it’s all that was presented. Chest shot is still my preference when presented.

Not sure I’ve ever taken anything but a chest shot over 100m as I know my limitations. Even during the day a chest shot at 250 seems a very long way to me and is the very outer limit of what I would attempt.
