Which UK airports allow the transit of firearms?

Hi All,

I am trying to get a flight to Europe for boar hunting. It seems that all UK airports have now either tightened up restrictions on the transiting of firearms with passengers. Is it true that only Heathrow and Gatwick will allow the transit of firearms? lf anyone has any idea about this, it is very appreciated.

Newcastle does as I am booked on KLM. Next month to Croatia via Amsterdam
I think Norwich takes guns still with KLM to Amsterdam as well ?

I tried to book a flight on KLM from Norwich, and I have been told Norwich will not transit firearms. Is this true? So I am looking for another airport. Birmingham is a candidate.

I flew last month from Manchester with Lufthansa - really straightforward but a £250 each way charge for the pleasure (long hall flight via Frankfurt to Windhoek)

I think I can transit my gun via Birmingham. Seems they are placing more and more restrictions on the smaller airports.

LHR is fine - certainly was in May. Just follow the rules and allow time...lots of

Ah, sorry just saw transit - not done that, but embarkation and arrivals with fireaarms were not a problem so can't imagine transit would present an issue

Lufthansa and KLM transport firearms. Birmingham transits firearms. I think Heathrow has got very difficult. Norwich do not seem to do it any more. The smaller airports were easy, but City and Norwich now seem to disallow firearms.

Some airlines refuse to accept firearms from certain UK airports. Lufthansa refuses to accept firearms from Heathrow ( or they did up to recently).

Carrying sporting or competition firearms

Sporting or competition firearms can be put in the aircraft hold. You must be over 18 years of age, or travelling with someone over 18 years of age.

The following types of firearms are permitted:

  • Sporting shotguns with barrels of longer than 24 inches (60cms)
  • Sporting rifles (including Air Rifles) of any calibre, but not semi-automatic weapons with a larger bore than .22
  • Sporting single shot handguns with a calibre of .22 or less
  • Any rifles and handguns with a calibre of .22 or less
Firearms must be unloaded and packed in a suitable gun bag. A maximum of 5kgs of ammunition is permitted per passenger and it must be packed securely, ideally in the manufacturer's container. Ammunition with explosive or incendiary projectiles is prohibited.

Before you travel you must contact our Customer Services team to add a sporting or competition firearm to your booking, as well as complete the Firearms Declaration Form and bring it to the airport with you when travelling.

One Firearms Declaration Form must be completed per firearm you intend to carry (even if they’re in the same case).

You’ll need the following documents to hand and you’ll need to bring them with you to the airport:

  1. documentation and licences
  2. export/import licences
  3. authorisation from local and national authorities.
Please make sure you arrive at the Bag Drop desks at least 90 minutes before Bag Drop closes to ensure that we can carry out all the necessary checks. If you arrive after this time, you may not be permitted to fly.

Easyjet between Inverness and Gatwick were brilliant, rock up 90 min before, and fill out the forms. From memory it was 40 quid as luggage?

bore diameter, barrel length, caliber. seems they are trying to limit transit for all firearms except those for ranges competition. no hunting guns admitted. or I an wrong?

Those limitations basically are the UK legal limitations on firearms in general
