Who has a roe in a chiller?

Hi all
I've been offered a chiller, well it's actually a fridge, but I haven't seen it yet but going by the rough arm span the lad showed me it was I'm not sure it will be big enough, could anyone please let me know roughly how much space I need for a roe with gambrel through the hocks with head and legs off

I’ve got a 5ft larder fridge that will fit two Roe at a push. I put a length of threaded bar near the top to maximise hanging space.

Sorry for my dumbness, so 5ft of height internal space is enough for a roe
You really need a tall larder fridge - a 5’ one is too small IMHO, especially allowing for the rail/gambrel loss. I made this mistake when I started and eventually acquired a tall larder fridge. Then, I was lucky enough to acquire a double door Pepsi fridge, and the rest is history as they say. Trying to get the maximum height led to the support arrangement shown but the front bar was a pain to live with so it got chopped as shown in the last picture.

Hang them from the aitch bone with an s hook (nowt complicated needed!) and it will save a LOT of headroom

It's my first chiller, well fridge, so so far I've only been able to go stalking on days when I've got someone lined up for the carcass if I'm not keeping it myself and I'm looking forward to having the freedom to go when I want or to shoot 2 if I see fit.
As for size and hanging, I'm happy to hang them by the aitch bone, in fact I think it's a great space saving idea, but I'm still not really sure how much actual height I need inside the fridge to be able to do it, if someone could give me a measurement (and I know not all deer are made equal so I won't be holding anyone to it) from the hocks and/or the aitch to the front knees when hanging that would be really helpful for when I go to look at this fridge, then I can work out from my S hook size etc weather it will work

The top of my hanging rail is 66" so 5' 6"


The fallow hung from the aitch bone making the neck around 14" off the deck.

Go shoot a roe and get it in fridge and stop worrying :tiphat:

I'm just trying to save going and buying and moving it and getting sorted to find that one won't fit and be stuck with a fridge that's no use and that I need to sell and then start the process again 👍🏻

That is fine, keep a look out for a decent coke chiller and if you find one grab it, when I skin deer especially with the change of winter to summer coats then my coke chiller is used as I hang/lay the legs for 2 reasons,
1 It helps dry the fresh outer layer off (silver skin) which in-turn makes removing any hairs a lot easier.
2 It gives you time to clear up for the cutting up part while it is drying off.

All the lines are in a deer to follow look at them in that previous picture post #9.

I was tempted just to say no to this one as its not full size but a mate offered me it and it's local so was going to have a look when back off holiday. He might be exaggerating it's size (🤔🤣) so I might see it and immediately know it's not big enough, but I thought if I had a measurement to take with me it would help me confirm if close

Changing the subject slightly, the chiller won't be used all the time, I thought if I turn it on before I go stalking, or ring the missus to turn it on if I need it that could work with times of the chiller and carcass cooling down, wots your thoughts please?

You could get a WiFi plug, then you can turn the chiller on from the field.

It depends really on how often you are going to shoot deer, as to whether it is better to leave it on all the time or just turn it on when you get one (or more...).

Turn the chiller on when you put the deer into it, or even a little while afterwards. You don't want to put a warm carcass straight into a cold chiller, if it can be avoided. Too rapid cooling of the carcass can lead to "cold shortening", giving you tough meat.

An empty chiller has minimal thermal mass to need precooling so there is little point having it on in advance
All the precooled air inside falls out the instant you open the door anyway and the sides are designed to be insulating

As VSS says, I hang mine to cool, with big deer they take a long time for the heat to drop so I leave them to hang, depending if it is a field gralloch take out the tied off back end then go and have a cup of tea or 2! Like the blood you need to get the heat out. I do switch my unit on when I get in just like I let my truck warm up before going out!

Well it will be half to 1 hour between gralloch and chiller and only roe round me although fallow not far away now but I've always wondered about these timings, don't want it in a cool chiller too soon and dont want it leaving out too long then

Exactly this ^^^

I run Tapo smart plug around the house and the chiller is on one. If there’s nothing in the chiller, I turn it on as I leave the permission usingthe App on my phone and by the time I’m back home, it’s cooling down nicely :thumb:
