Wild boar Calibres

It's the larger boar of Europe that interest me

On foot preferably

I care not whether I see one - let alone shoot one

It is the bush, the challenge and adventure that appeals

.. and a few scoops of an evening around a fire with good company

Hopefully your firearm is locked away before the few scoops. 🤣

I recently built a 308 rifle beginning with a Howa short action I had laying around. I have a very good barrel maker here in Australia, and he fitted a nice 22inch sporter weight tube, then I went and got a Synthetic stock from Bell and Carlson. The rifle is what is often referred to as a truck gun, meaning that it will handle targets of opportunity, but with pigs uppermost. I changed out the bottom metal to accommodate a 10 round mag, and topped it with a 4-12 Vixen scope. My load is a 150gn Hornady Interlock and 45gn Varget, or it's known here, ADI2208. The idea was to have a rifle that will handle a mob of pigs, hence the mag capacity, and be carried in my Polaris side by side. It's yet to see action but that will change shortly. Wild pigs are a huge problem over here.P1040111.webp

If you want a rifle that shouldn’t cause headaches with licensing, is suitable for any deer in the UK and also any boar on the continent you need to look no further than 308 or 30-06.

Given the cost of ammo these days, any additional supposed advantage of bigger cartridges is more than made up for by an easy shooting rifle that is used lots and you are totally familiar with.

But equally there is something nice about a big bore rifle.

I may be doting (moi?) but aren’t military chamberings like the .308/7.62 banned in some European countries or perhaps that has changed?

You are partially correct in that Military calibres were banned in France for many years after the WW2. It was a legacy of Nazi legislation. This legislation was dropped about 15 years ago.

It is one of the reasons why the 7x64 became a very popular all round cartridge. It will do everything the 30-06 can do but legal everywhere.

I would have suggested it as a very good all round cartridge, but it has never gained much popularity in the UK so ammo is not nearly so available. Instead we fell in love with the 270 win, which is not particularly common on the continent.
