The First winter for my chap in his new kennel outside he has a rather nice sleeping area just wondering what to bed him on.

Lots of straw at hand but I imagine this would need regular changes to keep it dry, do shavings work well?

Would be interested to hear your thoughts on the subject.

Shredded paper is really good and is easy to clean when wet. I avoid straw as it’s hollow and can harbour parasites. Shavings are good but can be messy when the dogs back and fourth a lot. The most important thing is to keep the draught out, a board he can lay behind works well.

I stopped using straw, paper etc many years ago.The dogs would push/drag it out of the boxes, damp and smelly ( the dogs too )🤦‍♂️ One thing that works for me is bare boards but I've sorted out double floors, so when it gets wet I remove a false floor to give it a chance to dry out. I've always thought to keep dogs out of a chill is the best thing ever.

Foam dog beds, old blankets etc - that can be disposed of when they get to wet, dirty, gave up on shredded paper as way to messy with it being dragged out across the yard.

The liveries have shavings I will pop a bucket full in and see how he goes.
I have to give a thumbs up to Mitton hall kennel systems for supplying the kennel excellent service to.,

iv been around outdoor dogs all my life and never would I let any of my dogs sleep on bare boards or dirty damp bedding, takes 5 mins to clean up and put fresh bedding in , I use shredded paper in winter and washable dog beds in summer , they love the paper after a hard days working

+1 for Mitton Hall Kennels,
Had mine a while now and find them so easy to keep looking like new.

Agreed about the dirty damp bedding, but dogs will often sleep on bare wooden boards out of choice, even if provided with (what seems to us) a more comfortable alternative.

In front of your fire ain't a bad place for a dog on a night.
If you can't share that with them, you are not getting it.
Plenty of dogs wouldn't thank you for that. I'd been working in a awful day when I was a teen. Thought I was doing dog a favour I brought it into kitchen, in front of fire etc. He ate his grub then was crying at door. Took off across yard through rain & back to his kennel door. Leave anthropomorphism to Disney 👍

I have the Mitton Hall kennels. I have Four springs and they all sleep outside. I use vet bed got plenty of these so I can change them regularly if they get wet and you can wash them in the washing machine 🐾
