Range Rover Pros & Cons

Thanks for the replies.

Ah well think I'll give the Range Rover a miss. There just seemed to be a few cheap highly specked ones being advertised - suppose that kind of tells a story.

Mind you if I found one with a new engine and gearbox, air suspension replaced by springs, a new ecu, and an lpg conversion, I could be tempted.:lol:

All the best

Stephen

Rangeys are the best car ever loved my old 2.5 Tdi .. except when it went wrong had gearbox problems and propshafts kept boggering up that asside compared to most modern cars it was cheap to repair, particularly if you are mechanically minded parts are really cheap for the classic, don't go for air suspension and if you do just throw it away if it goes wrong and put on old springs .. simples
I bought a new one, well new to me:doh: last year done 80k from new full service history gave £350 !!! Taken me a year to get round to sorting it stands me about a grand in welding paint bits an bobs and will be well under 2k on the road totally rebuilt, ok they are thirsty but you can get second hand gas kits for next to nothing off Ebay does around 30mpg on gas so figure out the depreciation etc not to bad a deal really and everything being equal should still be worth at least what you paid for it if you want to sell up later.
Look at Paddock Motors for parts cheap as chips couple of front discs just cost me about 12 quid each off them, how much are jap ones?

That said I have just bought a Navara just in case :D

Had a Disco, was great vehicle, good on diesel except when I was in a hurry,,had no problems with it until it caught fire outside my house:shock:.And no, I didn`t !!! Apparently theirs a bit of wiring loom under the centre armrest/box thingy and where I used to stuff rifle between drivers seat and the box it moved and wore through the loom:???:(Theres idea for anyone who wants to know)
Had a P38 RR it was a bit of an oddball, all the extras, sunroof, full leather, electric thiss and that, I never used most of it, just jumped in it and went, and I admit, I didn`t exactly treat it with kid gloves,ok I used it and abused it, it done exactly what I wanted where I wanted and with what ever I wanted in the back, beleive me they will go some strange places !
Mine was diesel, I had it chipped(350 quid) was good on diesel even better on bio, and didn`t cost that much to run, was serviced and just had usual bits and bobs.
I have to say, with LR/RR reputations, I think I had 2 good ones, but you can say that about any make, someone has had a problem and they hate them, like me with Mitsi Shoguns:mad:
I found the parts I did buy were cheaper than expected.Stainless exhaust was 300 quid, don`t ask what happened to the original:oops:.
Don`t lose the key to a RR,the"folding" key, as mate lost his cost him 200 quid in Birmingham, I broke mine, cost me 100 quid in Ross on Wye.
Oh yes, if clutch goes, don`t do as I did and drove it for 3 days with no clutch, doesn`t do the selectors alot of good.

I am just about to trade my 06 range rover for a new discovery 4. THe range rover has been a good but not brillient car. It had the old 3.0L engine and averaged about 20mpg. Good off road few electrical issues when I first got it but sorted promptly by land rover. New discovery 4 much better car even better the new range rover. Join the NFU and get 5% discount off a new one.

I was about to buy a Discovery 4 Commercial and the LR list only quoted 3% NFU member discount on Disco 4... ONLY 1.5% from dealer on top... some car though and miles better than RR and RRS by miles.

Try Paul at direct car sales in Ripon 01765605041 I paid 44K for a hse with a few extras that works out at about 12%ish discount. Mention my name Cherrs Simon McCabe

Sold my old 2.5 diesel P38 earlier this year & bought a 2005 4.4 Vogue, had it LPG converted & save for a couple of blown bulbs the only problems I've had have been with the LPG system (leaks from where they spliced into the Range Rover cooling system). I average 21 to the gallon on a run which pretty much equates to 40 mpg as LPG is around half the price of unleaded. List price of the Vogue when new in 2005 was around £62K I picked this one up with 60K on the clock for £20.5K with a years warranty & it was spotless, a bargain in my opinion. Its the most comfortable vehicle save an Audi A8 I've ever owned & has a shed load of grunt, on off road tyres its not been beat yet & tows effortlessly.

Oh & the old P38 was sold to a keeper friend of mine & he's dead chuffed with it & in 7 months he's had no problems save a blown tailgate bulb.

Cheers
Chris

How did you find the diesel Chris? I have heard that they are probably the best engine on the P38 BUT are dog slow.

When the door seal rubbers perish with age your gun in its slip and any muntjac rolling around in the tailgate area will work their way out through the door gaps and be left on the highway just like the Nottingham Police gun bag a few years ago.
I was a body engineer for 40 years. and I still like their no nonsense style up till the classic was phased out though.

Hi Stephen

Yep they need a good boot up the back side to get moving but I used to cruise on the motorway at a steady 85-90 & it was fine, once your up there it's ok getting there is the chore. For a 2.5 they do have a lot of low down grunt even though it's lugging around 2+ tons, the engine is very reliable as I believe its a detuned version of the old 5 series BMW unit. ;)

I used to get 24 mpg again on a good run. A friend had one & he had his chipped & it made the world of difference & he got better mpg, if I had kept mine I would have gone the chipped route.

Avoid the 4.6 petrol units even if they are LPG converted, they suffered a lot because the wall thickness between the cylinder liners was too thin.

Cheers

Chris

I had my 2.5 chipped and made world of diffference, and to echo what Rob says 3.9 litre and above did suffer from thin walls just because the old 3.5 V8 was just bored out and hence the thin walls.
Looked at a 2005 4.4 petrol today, and thats was on the forecourt for $33,000.One day maybe:lol:
Leave the Italian diesel(VM) ones well alone, they reknown for cooling problems.

I went from a defender to a p38 range rover 2.5 dse, I was forever dipping into my pockets to sort problems out. First it was the air suspension then the climate control unit then the head gasket went, and the fuel consumption was bad, I expected it to be heavey on the juice but not quite as bad as it was. I wish I never sold the defender to be honest, you either get a good one or a very bad one.

We had for some years a Vogue SE automatic last on of the classics. It had the works but was rather costly. Firstly air suspension failed so converted to springs. You need to ensure they are cleaned underneath and wax treated to keep the corrosion at bay. On a long trip fully loaded with a trailer would do 25mpg. I remember vividly removing the front drive shaft hardy spicer on the side of a swiss motorway. However we got home on rear wheel drive. Back tailgate rusts for fun and the catches wouldnt work. Central locking had a mind of its own. iDesel injector pump died and that was a £1k touch.

Ours was 7 seat conversion, and was in the main quite reliable, did numerous runs from Bristol to Switzerland and it was the most comfortable car I have ever driven. Was always very sure footed and I drove it in some terrible snow and ice when skiing. Never got stuck. Brakes/ABS superb. For shooting with the back tail gate down is an exceptional shooting platform, mini movable high seat.

Alas no more but did have a significant finacial drain.

If you want a bomb proof diesel then has to be a Landcruiser.
