Good Evening Gents.
A year and a half late, but finally booked myself and hunting mate on a trip to Africa. It will be our first so there's lots to learn and do in a very short time.
We will be in Africa the middle of October coming.
Shooting plains game from Eland down to Duiker.
We both only plan on taking .30-06 and I have a few hundred 180gr Norma mega bullets I can work a load up for.
Question is has anyone any experience of using this bullet on African plains game?

I've read up and see people like bonded bullets which retain weight and are less lightly to fragment. The Mega should fit this description.
Bullets like the swift A frame and Barnes monolithic types are popular but mostly this info comes from America.

Any advice would be read with interest.
By the way I am going with an outfitter who uses this site so with luck we will have a great trip and I'll do a write up. I enjoy reading others so feel I ought to make the effort too.

My error. I have LAPUA MEGA bullets.

Hi Woodmaster, your chiose of calibre is the best IMHO. 180 grain bullet is also a very good chiose . I have now done 4 Africa trips and I would not compromise on accuracy. I used Sierra gameking in my 243 this year on baboon, warthog and oryx. Great results. I use bonded bullets for Eland, Hartebeest and Kudu. I would use your Norma bullets if they are accurate, on all your animals. Have a great trip and I look forward to your write up. Beware of Africansafari-itus it is incurable and the simptoms can only be relieved by revisiting said country.

It’s not the bullet but where you put it that matters.

Not shot anything bigger than Wildebeest on the trip I got on back on yesterday but last year I shot an Eland bull with a 6.5x55 factory Norma 140 gr Nosler Partition. Wasn’t after one but....

Just shoot what you normally shoot and stay close, you will be happier.

I will now repeat myself, it’s where you put the bullet that matters, not all African animals are the same.
Organs are not where you think.

Not used or heard of Norma Mega but shot plenty of Lapua Mega which I used in a .300 Win-mag 150gr 185 gr and 200gr in my opinion superb Projectile a mate of mine used 150gr Lapua Mega in his 30-06 and shot every species of Deer in the UK Driven abroad along with Reindeer and Moose again his opinion best Projectile he has ever loaded and used

A lot of the African plains game are just big - Oryx, Kudu, Zebra, Sable etc are much bigger than most UK Red Deer - think more the size of a horse. You want a bullet that will go through and break both shoulders. Given the nature of the African bush you may have to take a quick shot at less than a perfect angle - so again a good tough bullet is useful.
