I got some monolithic bullets sako 80gr powerhead 2 and thought i would give them a go on roe. Im now a little worried as i heard that some people have had them go straight through and have them run some long distances. anyway anyone used these or similar in 243 ? like the gmx round on here how does that perform on roe and fox?

I just like the idea of non toxic but im not stuck on it if opinion is not to bother yet?

I haven't used that particular combo, but I use 120 grain power heads in 6.5 for Sika hinds, they're about the same size as a Roebuck , no issues at all .

thanks for the reply. im not sure but i can see these becoming the norm in the future.

I use Fox monolithic bullets and their terminal performance is very similar to a premium lead bullet like the nostler partition. Normally the exit would is about the size of a golf ball and there is very little bruising around the entry.

I home load and usually go down a weight class and up a few hundred FPS with the monolithics which gives me a trajectory advantage.

Because the bullet has better integrity i have found they still mushroom perfectly at speeds where even a partition would start to shed bits in the meat.

This is a 130grain .308 bullets dug out of sand backstop. MV was about 2900fps so it’s up at 270 performance levels.

Most bullets Will pass through roe deer

Monolithics are no different and providing they are travelling at sufficient velocity will expand properly and provide a humane kill

Do these have plastic ballistic tips to them? Not monoliths like solids for DG? I have some 80gn sako .243 which are solid copper but with blue nylon tips. I haven’t used them on roe yet as I fear they wouldn’t expand enough but the photos show that isn’t a problem

Andy what powder are you using for the 130gr fox? Also could you pm me some load data you use for them as I intend to start reloading for them!

Cheers

I’m using 42gn of N133 in RWS brass with CCI primers if I remember correctly.

It’s a fast powder for 308 but in my rifle the load is safe. It’s a single shot blaser K95 so I don’t even have cam assisted extraction like a bolt action and there is never any problem.

I suspect your right, there's a major push to ban lead ammunition of any type, anywhere for anything regardless of the evidence.
But that'll be a for a different thread on a different day....

Stay safe.

I'm using 130g Fox monolithic non-leads in 7x57. They're at around 2880ft/sec. Accuracy has been very good so far, and I'm seeing very good terminal performance on roe with much reduced damage as the bullet seems to mushroom perfectly, but without disintegrating.

Well took them out today no re zero needed really just a slight adjustment and the group grearI. Even off sticks at 100 yards 1/4 inch group so was pleased with that did have one flyer but that was me you know when you do it too but what was good it still would been a kill so happy just the price that's the killer

I'm much more confident with these if I'm honest. Off sticks my group was so tight I dint think I've ever shot so well off sticks. So going to have another play next week they are such a pleasure to shoot over the 95gr Winchesters I was using. Anyone noticed more copper build up in the barrels with them?

Monolithic work well on Roe. Runners is more often than not related to shot placement. At higher velocities and where bullets strike bone they are very good, and probably better than most.

Exactly the same for me in my 7x57 I am Fox factory ammo.

Also using RWS HIT in my 7x65R and getting same result.
