Do I need a 7x57?

General thing to bear on mind if you are getting a kipplauf is the shorter barrel lengths don’t allow all the power to be burnt off for some calibres. I don’t know if this is a problem. Sure someone will add to my ‘half-comment’

What ‘shorter’ barrel lengths?

The action on any break barrel will permit a longer barrel within an overall rifle length due to the design.

Have been trying to look into this I think the barrels are 23.5” so trying to play with QL. It does seem an issue with some of the data that quotes 24-26” barrels particularly the Vit data.

I have the K95 stutzen, and all the stutzens come with a short 500mm barrel. There is a fair amount of muzzle flash from factory ammunition, but that's to be expected.

I'll be loading for it, so I'll use an appropriate powder, to get 100% burn.

Non stutzen rifles come with barrels up to 600mm (I think) so factory wouldn't be an issue.

I’ve got a Merkel K3 and it’s 20”. Shorter than my bolt action rifles. That ‘shorter’ length.

There must be a way of getting a moderator on that.

Lovely view from your highseat.

Think they'd have to go down the lines of Blaser and build it into the barrel design which would mean the wood at the end would be hellishly wide! I like the 'traditional' look so put up with blast

Prinz Waffen. The stainless is 338 Lapua.!

Non-rimmed cartridges in break action rifles are ones to be avoided I reckon. I don't see the need when there are so many good chamberings that are rimmed.

5.6x60r
5.6x57r
6.5x57r
7x57r
7x65r
(My personal pick of the bunch - think the best bits of .270W and .30-'06)
7.62x54r
8x57r
9.3x74r
.444 Marlin
.45-70 Gov't

There are probably more...

But for general deer, I'd go for one of the 2 in bold...

I have a 9.3x74R for boar, but really fancy a 7x65R for stalking too

A lot depends on what is available and whether or not you are in the fortunate position of being able to specify the build.

I have to say that I don’t feel disadvantaged with a ‘standard’ 7x57 in my Heym 44b, and if I’d waited until the ‘correct’ rimmed version turned up .....?

Well, let’s just say hell would have probably frozen over first. ;)

I spent 3yrs looking for a used kiplauf, in 7x57R or similar, and nothing came up for sale, just 243's, & 308's, neither of which met my criteria, so in the end, I ordered a new rifle, to my spec', and even that took nigh on two years to the day, to be delivered ! But for me, it was worth the wait.
