My drilling is dead. Long live my NEW DRILLING!

Here you are, this is what I mentioned the other day:

eGun

Aus einer Geschäftsauflösung konnten wir noch 10 Drillinge der Marken Simson/Merkel/Wolf
in verschiedenen Kalibern und Ausführungen übernehmen, hier:
Simson Modell 90S, Kaliber 12/70 7x65R
Lauflänge 63 cm, Schaftlänge 37 cm

"Following a shop closure we still have ten drillings of the Simson/Merkel/Wolf brands in different calibres and finishes to offer, here a Simson Model 90S etc...."

I've now had a session on the range at the West London Shooting school (not cheap, but close by and excellent) and tried a couple of different RWS loads, both 162gr: a cone-headed one, and a nickel-plated round-headed one. After some fiddling around working out which was was up or down on the Kahles scope (the top left to centre trail of rounds...), I had it shooting at the centre target, then set out to shoot some groups. Here are the results! It likes the cone-point ones in the top left corner (the touching holes in the circle), and it doesn't really like the round ones in the top right. Also, the ones on the left make a messy hole as they must start expanding on contact with the plywood. The ones on the right punch through like target rounds. They're probably too hard for roe, fox and muntjac, so they'll be used up on the running deer range at some point.

Finally, the middle target has one hole in it, which is a test with the open sights and cone-points, for if a fox turns up when I'm walking up game tomorrow. I couldn't be happier with it, it's brilliant!

lools good - expect the ones above the target are typical drilling / combination gun barrel getting warm, but given that its an A4 piece of paper they are all dead foxes. Must admit I never liked that RWS Cone Bullet. My go to load for a long time has been 51.5gn of IMR4831 under a 139gn Hornady softpoint flatbase bullet - nice a mild, good grouping and drops everything. For Pigs I use 50gn of IMR 4350 under a 173 gn H-Mantle Bullet - flattens them. But also not too rough on Roe deer.

No, the diagonal string and ones above the target are trying to get the scope pointing to the right place, aiming at the centre target (where the single shot from the open sights is). Then we have the two groups in the top corner and they're all in the circles. except that one on the right, vertically centred but high, and that was operator error. The guy from the Shooting School had a couple of goes on the right for fun too!

That’s really good grouping then. With that drilling you can pretty much shoot anything out to 300m this side of needing a dangerous game calibre.

Amazing what a well made gun and suitable ammunition can do. Lovely results. Almost a second present in itself.

Gosh! What cals/bores are they?
A 7x57R / 16G Zeiss variable on swing mount (my main use), a 6,5x57R / 16G scope on claw mounts it sits in the safe not being used, and an 8x58R .318cal / 16G fully engraved older drilling on claw mounts it also sits in the safe not being used but have now sourced cases so will be reloading for it soon,

It has taken me almost a year to get roung to developing a load for my Simson drilling, but I have finally managed to test some.7x65R loads at Bisley. I'm quite surprised at how different the groups for the five loads were, but nevertheless, we have a winner. Loads are incremental in half grains in a Z shape from top left. Bottom left makes it through the gate process to the production stage!

Also a close up of the winner with an extra confirmation shot. That's 49.5gr of N550 with a 150gr Degol bonded hollowpoint on top. It's punchy. The other guys at the BSRC all turned up the knobs on their ear defenders!

Good groups there PM - according to the Viht data suspect 49.5g of N550 will pushing 2,700 fps plus and with a good 150gn bullet that will be good enough for just about anything that you will want to shoot. And with that grouping it's a 250 yd rifle. So ideal for a September Stag, and then on the way down take a right and left at some walked up grouse, and then you can take a Salmon as it jumps a waterfall (yes have done it once a long time ago with a 20 bore) - you have to get the correct estate.

And if you are very lucky your sporting prowess may well help you secure a royal or even an imperial MacNab!

Now shoot a pet load group from a cold and clean barrel if that's how you return it to the cabinet.

Well that will be another time, it's quite hard to make it to Bisley these days, but point taken. The opportunity will arise at some point. I mean, if they didn't close over the Christmas holidays, that would be an ideal time.

Nice little daydream committed to writing there! Not sure it's likely to come true anytime soon though. The closest thing would be if a muntjac or fox broke cover during a walked up day I'm going on in December.

I've checked the Viht data and you're right, it could even be closer to 2800. Whatever, punchy enough!
