Thinking of purchasing a bergara single shot rifle in 222rem as a dedicated night vision rifle , seen one in my local shop a few weeks back and was took up with how short it is , am i mad ? Does anyone on here own one? TIA

Have one in 222. Does what it says on the tin. Nothing fancy, very safe with the hammer, great cab gun and groups under an inch. Only thing is a short LOP, but that may be the arms I inherited from an orangutan !

The only thing on my mind is going back to a single shot from a magazine bolt action, but i still think i will get one as even with a 20" barrel and moderator it's going to be a lot more compact than a bolt gun,

With a bit of practice you can get pretty fast at reloading.
The treble is compact and very pointable, the 16.5” barrel while being shorter isn’t as pointable. If that makes sense !

I bought a Baikal single shot rifle (think single shotgun but with a barley twist barrel).
It was a stop gap while I saved for something better. My experience was it was accurate enough for 150yds but didn’t inspire longer shots. The lose of sight of the quarry whilst reloading was a definite down side. I wouldn’t say it was much slower than a carefully operated bolt action (I save my brass). But Losing your fox in the long grass because you took your eyes off it is all to easy.
However they are popular with some keepers certainly locally one in 223 went to be carried on the “rounds”. I suppose there’s less pressure for a reload when going round the snares.

You using it with factory ammo ?

I'm still a bit undecided what to do, either get the bergara or get a good secondand tikka and chop the barrel down to 18" maybe, so it's more manageable in the truck

Wouldn't cutting a bolt action down to 18", still leave you with a longer overall rifle length, than you would have with a 20" BA13 ?

Yes it would, i don't think going any shorter would be sensible, i think the bergara is looking the better option at the minute

Yes, Hausken MD45. Not too big and doesn’t upset the balance.
That's a muzzle mounted isn't it , think the guy in the shop was pushing the same mod, personally i prefer the over barrel mods, wildcat evo seems to have good reviews and reasonable price
