3 Calibres

If you had to pick 3 Calibres to cover all bases what would you pick.

Rabbit, fox and various species of deer.

Be very interested to hear your opinions based around using factory loads, cost of rifles etc.

At present I’m housing .22lr , .17hmr and .243

I’d probably go for .22lr, .222 and one of 6.5x55, .270 or .308.

I have no interest in shooting big things abroad or boar to be honest so any of those last 3 will deal with any UK deer.

I currently run .22lr, .243 and 6.5x55. Considering downsizing the .243 to a .222 but it doesn’t really make financial sense. 243 zeroed with 58 grain vmax but will happily shoot 85 grain game king home loads. 6.5x55 zeroed with 140 grain soft points so I can cover all bases.

I’m flirting with 22-250 or .204 as a fox choice

Thought about .270 but comparing to .308 what’s ammunition availability?

I’d really just like more guns I think 🙄

22-250 is my thoughts for fox and roe in the future.
not certain about ammo availability with 270 vs 308 but as I reload it’s not a big issue for me. I think I’d take the 270 over the 308 as it can do all I need it to do with shooting a little flatter than the 308 (I think lol).
My license renewal is next year at the same time as a milestone birthday so I’ll defo be putting in for a variation then. Not certain on calibre yet but steering to a 22.250 or I could get the 270 and rebarrel my 243 to 22.250 when the time comes, decisions, decisions , decisions!!!

If I was starting again it would be 22lr, 22-250 and 270.
(I actually have 22lr, 243 and 270).

What 243 do you have at present? I’ve just downloaded the variation form and printed it. I’ll make sure it’s there waiting for my FAO when the pandemic is over.

.22 Hornet
.22-250
7 mm Rem Mag.

And I haven't got any of them.... Mainly because the Hornet and the 7 mm require reloading and I don't, and I went for a .243 over the .22-250 because I wanted roe-legal in England. But in an ideal world....

I nearly went for the .22lr over the Hornet but if this choice is about ideals and I had no shortage of loading options I could make the Hornet cover more bases in the big gap between a rimfire and a 1000 ft/lb CF. It would be hard not to have a .22 rimmie in the cabinet though. No shooters home is complete without one. If it was four calibres it would go on like a shot.

curently a Sako 85 in a McMillan stock which I really like and it shoots well.
I handled the Sako black wolf carbon at the BSS and have to say it got me thinking! The blasers also got me thinking tho lol.

With the availability and cheapness of 22lr and rifles, how could you not have one of them.

If buying CF ammunition, rather than reloading, I would look around the gun shops you have locally and see what they stock. Locally to me, you really isn't much choice, and you have to take whatever they have, even in things like 308win. If it's the same for you, then going for anything but the most common calibres could be a problem.

If I could only pick three. 22lr, 243win, 308win.
