Twitter - QC appointed to ban trophy hunting.

John Cooper QC

“I'm pleased 2 be instructed by @CBTHunting leading @Animallawyersuk to consider CITES & UK Govt on #cannedhunting of #lions #TrophyHunting”

And the first response to his exciting news:

“Just one more nail in the coffin for game animals that don’t live in national parks. Take away their legitimate value to the native people and they will only be left with illegitimate value and will be poached out of existence. And you are ‘pleased’?”

A Johnny Seven!

Oh, the best toy EVER. You can't believe what wildlife fell to that awesome device. I think pretty much every toy dinosaur from the Triassic and Jurassic period fell to its devilishly ingenious features. I'm now wondering if I still have mine buried in the loft somewhere....might have to raid the younger family members to recover the my favourite Stegosaurus and his pals though.

People ask what's your favourite calibre? Very obviously it's the Johnny Seven!

Oh this sounds so sad.

John Cooper had a head position in lacs at one point didn’t he ?

John Gordon Cooper QC (born 15 September 1958 in Wolverhampton)[1] is a British barrister specialising in human rights and criminal law. He is also a broadcaster and politician. He is a member of the Bar of England and Wales, where he practises with '25 Bedford Row' and the Australian Bar. He has been chairman of the League Against Cruel Sports since 1996, and he was appointed honorary professor of law at Cardiff University in 2011.

He ran for the House of Commons as a candidate for the Labour Party in the 1987 election in North West Surrey and in the 1992 election in Amber Valley. He was a councillor on Watford Borough Council from 1990 to 1994.[1]

He is a member of '25 Bedford Row' Chambers in London. He specialises in cases of homicide and serious violence, serious fraud and drug offences. He has also acted in cases such as the Jacintha Saldanha inquest, Duchess of Cambridge Prank Call case, the largest ever import of heroin in the UK, and represented Nicola Edgington during her murder trial.

In 2012, he successfully acted for Paul Chambers, in his appeal over the Twitter Joke Trial.[2]

I think if one were to ban "trophy" hunting, the way to do it so as not to adversely impact protections for wildlife who would otherwise be poached etc. would be to force the nations own government to subsides the shortfall. How would that happen? Well, I notice that a lot of the countries where "trophy" hunting exists are also countries who receive state aide from us. We pay around £14 billion in state aid, with Africa receiving around 50% of that. By putting contractual obligations as to where it will be spent may help, or make a proportion of their funding contingent on achieving a criteria.

I often hear about ban this, ban that..but never any thought about the stakeholders impacted etc.

Also, it brings into question what constitutes as a "Trophy Hunt".

E.g.

Roe buck cull £70 based on a 4 pointer, additional points are £20 each. I shoot a 6 pointer. Is that a trophy?

It depends..

You cant ban something that hasn't been defined.
