Air rifle calibre choice

.177 for me, I’ve used mine on rats, feral pigeons and head shot rabbits, parallax on the scope, thinking about getting a pard 007 for it instead of a lamp :)

Does the job admirably, very very accurate out to zero at 35 yds

wouldn’t have any concerns over shots to fill ratio, only takes a minute to refill

ive got the bigger bottle on my wolverine and it will do a good night out with ease

I've got HW100 in .177 full length and .20 in carbine. Both are very accurate when you feed them the right pellet, and not as pellet fussy as the other rifles I've had! I rate the HW100 as by far the best PCP rifle I've tried, including Daystate airwolf, air arms S410 and BSA R10. Both my rifles produce 1 hole groups off a bipod out to 35 - 40 yards. I use the .20 for stalking around in woodland and mainly taking standing shots. The .177 is used off a bipod, including using NV for ratting where I tend to take head shots. All the calibers will work very well for ratting but I tend to use the .177 as its slightly flatter and therefore more accurate at night when distance can be difficult to judge. Crossman premier, 10.4 grain in .177 and JSB 13.4 .20 are my pellets of choice.

I use .22 in sub FAC for everything and thats based on 45 years experience. Worn out 2x BSA Mercury's .Have a HW77K in .22 very accurate but heavy. I have one of the very first Air Arms S200 that came into UK. Tony at Sandwell Field Sports supplied and fettled it and still going strong. Go to pellet gun. Also have a Daystate LR 90 in .177 and uprated to 19 ft lb. Not something I would repeat. Better at sub 12. If going FAC then I would have a .20 cal.

Air arms runs well on super domes, and just sublime when plinking down the garden.

Hw100 sporter never liked the thumbhole stock .177 if you go carbine then smaller cylinder so yes less shots, you can do a Dr. Goofball conversion cut end of stock off to fit larger cylinder if your feeling brave!

Yes love them -as I said I used to have a 97k but now have a hw100k and Daystate air ranger FAC still do have a hankering for a springer though!
TomT3 I noticed an older post in which you were offering the opportunity to purchase your DS air ranger. I have scouted around to see if a sale had followed...??
If you still have it, do you think that you might once again be willing to part ways with it for the right money??

I've recently been trying out the Hades pellets in 22. Really good results with a fair bit more of a wound channel, also very accurate in my Daystate.

I had the original hw100 then the carbine I can’t really fault it. To be honest, only slight issue I see is that the pressure gauge is at the barrel end of the rifle which isn’t ideal. Over than that it is defiantly one of the best if not the best PCP airgun ever made IMO.

I had a HW100 too when living south of the border and I occasionally miss having it for a plink at targets and using on garden vermin.

However Supreme Leader Nicola's efforts at effectively making air rifles on par with firearms/shotguns has killed all interest in air rifles for me.

Why would I want to store an air rifle in a gun safe? And trying to find somewhere which can refill tanks at a decent price isn't easy, not to mention lugging the bloody tank about!

.22rf all the way, if you need a sub 12ft then go .177

Living in Scotland I would just get an FAC air rifle that can be turned up and down, but the fact that they cost much more than a good .22rf has severely dettered me.

As you must have the thing on an FAC wouldn't an FAC PCP .25 be the best of all assuming there was no possible risk of over-penetration damage to be taken account of?

.25 also opens up the possibility of using slugs which are becoming more and more popular with companies like FX offering slug specific barrels.

Matt Dubber (AirArms Hunting SA) has even come out with his own line of slugs, although I believe they are .22 cal

To be frank, I'd much rather use a catapult at short range

:stir:A HW100 is great, but not as good as a Tikka T1x in .22rf or 17hmr
My ticket has just been renewed and I managed to get them to let me keep and unused FAC air slot.

My FEO did ask why I wanted FAC air when I've got an HMR and a .22 lr. The answer is very simple. Because I want it to shoot corvids and squirrels out of trees. I can't shoot a cartridge rifle, any cartridge rifle, into the tree tops. With FAC air I can because an air pellet will expend all its energy, stall and fall out of the sky like a raindrop before it completes it trajectory. A bullet will not and will retain potentially deadly energy right up to the point where hits the ground. She hadn't been aware of that. She is now, which is good.

Moderated .410 not fit the bill?

Incidentally, I was leaning towards an FAC HW 100. I've now thinking I may up the budget a tad and put an Air Arms S510 Xtra in the frame as well.
It will be in .22
