Freyr and Devik

I have to say the more digging I’m doing the more concerned I’m actually becoming with the previous comments about FC incidents (and I’m aware of others) where maintenance hasn’t been the issue. These do appear to be failing at an alarming rate and in alarming ways. I think I will go back to Cluny to discuss as I actually wonder whether these really are up to any of the the hype. Ffs. I actually thought for once someone had come up with a good design. Wrong!

Also to you - sources please.

I am reading quotes on this thread like “Failing at an alarming rate” can we get some facts, dates and figures if this is the case. I have one on my 300wm I am very happy with it but if there is an issue can it be data and fact based please or we will be shortly descending in to the same non fact based ”speculation” discussions about vaccines

I have one of the F&D mods on my 6.5se and so far I have had no issues whatsoever. I don’t follow a particularly stringent cleaning regime, after each use I remove the mod and let it dry on a rad, check the internals for obvious damage and then clean and grease the threads ready for next time.

My concern is that I normally stalk daily and alone so a potentially injury causing dangerous moderator is a real worry.

The problem is that people like to gossip (which is not a reflection on anybody here on SD). We all see it happen, one day is a conversation between stalkers about how light the mod is and it’s amazing that it can take the pressures, the next day this has morphed into chatter about how someone heard from someone else that a guy they knew had one that failed, within a week there are discussions on forums about multiple failures and injuries sustained. We all have to be careful as we are discussing someone’s livelihood and fellow stalkers safety, so if there are facts then we should hear them and understand the whole picture so we can act to stay safe, but if it’s gossip we should all refrain from sharing.

How did you get > 1 per rifle? My FEO says "no" I keep meaning to ask
Easy, on one occasion I asked for one at the same time I asked for a new rifle and the other time I did not ask for one but was granted permission to get one when I asked for a new rifle.

I tend to speak as I find, I’ve got a 280 titanium thats now sat on its second 300wm barrel. I don’t abuse the thing but equally don’t pussy around every time it’s used....the baffle section may visit the ultra sonic once of twice a year and the main case thread might get greased at the same time, other that that nowt. I’m not going to put an exact number on it, but at a guess I’ve put in excess of 600 rounds down it in the past 2- 3 years and last time I looked it still looked pretty decent....I will take the cover off in the next few days and pop a picture up for all to see. Do I want one to blow up in my face?.....NO not particularly, would I buy another, yes and actually need one now....maybe I’m mental because I’ve also owned at least 3 r93’s and still have most of my face intact😆

Remind your FEO that they are a public servant, you pay taxes (presumably) and hence they should serve you if your request falls within the confines of the law.

Easy way is to get a moderator for each chambering/calibre and then use the same thread pitch across rifles.

I thought that FEO’s had realised many years ago that a moderator is a piece of H&S equipment to protect the shooter from hearing damage. I certainly use the health and safety justification whenever I need one.

It really shouldn’t matter if you have one per rifle or 10 per rifle.....only one can be used at a time so what’s the problem?

I think I'd certainly be getting in touch with Cluny and Mr Freyr, seems they've just tried to fob you off as they certainly knew the issues that Forestry England had with their moderators.

So after a conservative 600 rounds could well be nearer 800.....this is how mine looks, frankly I don’t think it’s too bad.F97C17FA-633E-41BF-87E9-40D9DB68BE0B.webp

I had the Sauer branded one on my 7mm RM , and although it was doin a good job at sound moderation, it seized after a few shots and couldn't take it apart for cleaning any longer.

As I’ve previously said I think the lack of negative comments about this moderator has been due to the fact that this is a new product and now the true realisation is that this has major faults. It’s a shame as I have one and thought it was very good at the outset but I now have my doubts. I was looking to buy another for my 300WM but will definitely be looking elsewhere.

So is there someone from Forestry England who can tell us what happened with their moderators?
In a word no, I doubt anyone (myself included) would be happy to share the information at this stage as investigations are ongoing but suffice to say FE have stopped using them due to failures.

My worry still remains that this is someone’s livelihood and the safety of fellow stalkers but we don’t have anyone giving a first-hand account of any faults, so it’s still hearsay and gossip. Is there not someone who has witnessed a problem or even seen the resulting damaged mod who can actually put some real life context to what happened and why?

Yes, I have personally but I can’t and won’t at this stage or on this platform.

From the comments given on this thread (and only on this thread, I couldn't find any other source) it seems that there have been incidents (how many is also unknown) with F&D mods used by members of Forestry England. So far so bad.
If F&D mods were the standard equipment of Forestry England this whole subject reminds me a bit of accidents with Volkswagens or Vauxhalls in the 80's and 90's. Indeed they were the cars most involved in accidents. No wonder, I say. They were the cars with the highest registration numbers and thus the most diven cars on the roads.
Back to Forestry England. We all know how govenment officials react as soon as there is only the faintest chance of something getting in the way of their carreer. They cover their a**e.
We have no idea why and under which circumstances those mods failed. And even Forestry England doesn't seem to know much more and are obviously very careful not to let out any info as can be judged based on the reaction of their members on this thread. As a consequence this is turning into a witch-hunt.
