60 mph speed limit

Part of my commute used to involve the A1 into London.

Get the timing wrong and it was horrendous. As I left the M25 it was exactly that.

I was sat behind a female driver in the long queue down to Staples Corner.

I was utterly mesmerised as she transformed herself with a full make over. By the time she got to Staples Corner she was stunning.
....and on the reverse commute home?

I fully agree, the truth is that most people avoid accidents only by luck, and that on the whole poor/inattentive driving doesn't have consequences (legal or otherwise)
I would also support refresher training and a far better and more comprehensive initial training/test. A lot of people pass their test and then their driving gets WORSE rather than better both in technical skill and "roadsense". I remember somebody once who had probably been driving nearly as long as I'd been alive, asking me why there was sometimes a broken white line in the centre and sometimes solids!
He'd probably taken his test back in the days before they started skimping on paint.
Some people think traffic lights are there to tell you when to stop and go!! How absurd not to know that they're to tell you how hot or "green" your driving skills are.

Recall a few years back travelling around the M25 in heavy traffic as a passenger & being totally gobsmacked to watch the lady driver next to me reading a book - she had it opened on the steering wheel & was reading & turning pages as we moved along 😳

Given the amount of motorway roadworks for my journeys M1 MK to M6 most of M4 large parts A1 we dream of 60mph. Some of this work has been going on for over 4 years, in China, or the Middle East they build miles of 4 lane motorways in months. To rub salt in the wounds you drive past miles of it 5 days a week without spotting anyone doing anything

Lady did exactly the same putting on makeup etc. whilst waiting for lights to change at the end of the M1 at Staples corner. Unfortunately, she hadn't put on handbrake. Ran into back of my car. She argued vehemently it was not her fault. Of course she had no insurance and was driving her boyfriends car. MIB paid out as police took over eight months to investigate.

How many drivers do not know what a solid white line on the near side edge of the road/ country lane indicates.
So many times seen a driver pulled up on one to answer the phone.

That made me check the Highway Code It indicates the edge of the road. Nothing wrong with stopping there, surely?

In the borders we have had 20mph limits in towns for the lat year or two…outcome is more collisions and people hit due to drivers not focusing due to the slow speed and being so bored they use they phones for work/recreational purposes more whilst driving. Well done 👍
Which was known before they decided to do their "experiment"

Pedestrians take less care as well apparently

What’s your source for that, because the 20 mph limit has been a great success in most places in East Lothian and I spend all summer in the Borders and it seems to be working there as well.

Happy for your source of facts to prove me wrong though.

Feo/PO, spilled it on recent meeting when discussed in banter.
Maybe they’re wrong of course, and it’s just his locality experiencing a negative effect of the speed regulations.

time will tell, review is due shortly I believe

I thought it was anything classed as commercial , that’s two new things I’ve learned, do you no the weight limit?
A quick look at a site like vans direct.co.uk/pickup-speed-limit, has all the info.
weight limit is 2040kg unladen weight.
pick ups over this weight,
Ford Ranger, Merc X class, VW Amarok, New Nissan Nivara, Toyota Hilux.

under weight limit
old D Max, Mitsi L200 and Defenders

60 on motorways and 50 on other roads.

Well all I know is that motor cars kill a lot more people than firearms. And there aren't many vehicles that go as fast as a speeding bullet...

I think the standard of driving has gradually worsened over the last 20-30 years or so. Funnily enough, this also coincides with my own (purely subjective) observations that 'people' in general seem to be getting stupider each and every time I have anything to do with them en masse. Commonsense is practically non-existent, courtesy the same, the overall level of basic general knowledge is utterly abysmal, the level of useless and self-serving virtue-signalling is stratospheric, celebrity-worship is bafflingly widespread, tolerance for others is at an all-time low, and the level of absolute incompetence, corruption, and downright hypocrisy from our so-called 'leaders' in whatever sphere is astounding. It would've been astounding if this hadn't extended to how people drive, to be honest. The majority of the bone-headed cretins I come across each time I venture onto our roads shouldn't even be allowed control of roller skates, let alone a half-ton vehicle capable of what used to be racing-car speeds . . . .
