Rare white 'stag' killed by police

im sure the police just rocked up and shot it with out any thought about back stop, safety or a worse out come.
does any body know the land it would have come from, is it controlled by stalkers or are the deer left to breed and over run the country side

They're discussing it on the Jeremy Vine show on Radio 2, I say discussing it - it sounds very one sided with lots of negatively being directed towards the Police. It's difficult to know exactly what has gone on and the decision making processes for the Police but I know that they couldn't take the risk of it injuring a member of the public. I know my local force won't shoot injured deer etc unless it is a last resort and getting a vet to euthanise it isn't possible.
No Police Officer is going to enjoy taking these actions.
People suggesting using a tranquilliser clearly have no idea how they work or the risks it involves.
It was even more painful listening than Jeremy’s usual fare…….. a high proportion of complete dribblers without even attempting to get a balanced, impartial speaker. Standard BBC to be honest.

Third thing then "stay out & await a vet"
Can you just read it, be a lot easier.

More than happy to pay towards a vet & it's continued welfare than discharge a fire arm in a puplic location. Different if it were gravely injured or of poor condition.
As many have said in the thread, such a shame.
Prior to retiring, I attended numerous incidents of loose or dangerous animals which were in a public place.
I have never known a vet who would attend to tranquilise or euthanize any unless the animal was confined or restrained.
I have never known any who were willing or able to use a "dart" gun.
The animals ranged from a greyhound running around an airport runway to a bull on the motorway.
They all got the bullet as a last resort

Had it been a large predator that had escaped a zoo, shooting it may have been needed.
But I really don't remember the last time a stray deer attacked and ate someone.

Neil.
Village Close to me. Cycling his bike on the road and took out by a running roe deer.
Will that suffice as how dangerous they can be.

In a previous life I had a patient (who died).

He was a motorcyclist and had taken a hit in the face from a low crossing pheasant. Had he had his visor down, he would have survived.

Just the way of things.

In Leicestershire back in the day it was one of members of their Tactical Support Group aka firearms team with a 12 bore pump action shotgun and solid slug for deer and cattle.

I don't see why it was such a shame personally.

Storm in a teacup.

I don't doubt that but the article doesn't mention the Police even trying that option. The press do like to miss things out to sensationalise though eh

Well as several attempts to sedate it failed by a certain animal welfare charity... The police had to shoot it, they used one of their G36 rifles which is chambered in the 5.56 round.

so how many vets local to Bootle happen to have a tranquilliser gun and in-date sedative darts on the shelf ready to go??

I’m pretty sure they require a special license so aren’t commonplace. I’m sure one of our resident vets could confirm @Buchan or @srvet ?

I read about this yesterday. I believe the RSPCA were called - their advice, which I think is quite correct, was just for everybody to back off, leave it be and it would quickly find its way out.

Instead major incident with no doubt lots flourescent yellow, flashing blue lights and i understand a number of police officers were injured trying to catch it.
