Which one? 6.5 PRC or 270 WIN

Would the Tikka magazine be a limitation of what weight (i.e length hence B.C) projectiles you are using?

The PRC seems a bit confusing st first, it is technically a short action 'Magnum' round but needs a long action to get full use out of the case with a slippery bullet.

I would wager that after 400m the 6.5 bullets performance will be dropping the 6.8's very quickly indeed.

Don’t get me wrong - I absolutely love the PRC, and I do think it’s better than the .270.

But I also recognise that the largest source of variation in where my shots go has nothing to do with the cartridge! The difference between .270 and PRC is smaller than the error introduced by my shooting…

I’m sure that at target (not stalking) ranges, shot by someone who really knew what they were doing, the PRC will pull ahead.

While we wait for the 7-300 PRC to come off the Hornady marketing plan, I think this is an excellent approach.

You haven’t got a cat in hells chance of finding ammo off the shelf in 6.5 PRC at the moment so it would be handloads only. The 270 would give factory ammo availability but few optimised to long range target use. The best jack of all trades for what you describe is probably the 6.5 Creedmore, however hunting at 600 yards is not something to be entered into lightly. Even the slightest error in range estimation or most significantly wind and you will have a wounded deer to contend with. If you are serious about longer range hunting then I would step up a gear and think about a 7mm or 300 Magnum.

I have and use both, I found that the 6.5 PRC shooting 143 grain factory, allowed me to see the strike in the scope, where with my .270 shooting 140 Accubonds will not do so.

Long range for me, & I would have to up skill quite a bit before a lifetimes trip, Here, .. some guys are using .25-06 Rem, I would take either the PRC 6.5 that is in build or the .300 Win mag.

Wasn't sold on the 6.5 PRC as my post in 2020 would confirm
I love a .270, grew up with one, will always have one.
Then I shot a 6.5 PRC using 147gr ELDM.....

less recoil
more velocity than a .270 would muster with 150gr factory ammo
The 147 is absurdly slippery
punches well above its weight and is exceptional on game

If I was looking for a 6.5 with some punch I would not hesitate to go for that.
As a result we now carry healthy volumes of PRC brass in two brands and plenty of ammo

My comment is now a year old and things will have changed, did Cluny Clays also have 270? I would expect they did. Do more gun shops stock 6.5PRC than 270… probably not..

This was over a year ago , I was going to buy a sauer pantera in PRC,but I didn't reload then and PRC ammo was ££££££ for factory.Cluny will normally have a good selection ,buy also are very dear .Glad you got sorted.

Yes, if you want to shoot Long distance the 6.5 PRC likely holds the Edge as your can obtain a high ballistic coefficient with lighter bullets than in the 270.
Furthermore there is also likely a larger selection of such high BC 6.5 bullets than 270 ones, due to the current popularity of several 6.5 cartridges. A good few of which people seem to enjoy using for longer distance shooting.

But Would you have easy access to affordable commercial high bc 6.5 ammo ?
And if not, do you reload or know someone who does, who can help you out in this regard?

Ps. If you're willing to go for a 270, why not consider one of the 7 mm caliber cartridges of similar case capacity, like the 280 rem, 284 win or 7x64?
Diameter wise they're Very close to the 270, but you'll, like with the 6.5 family of bullets, likely have a wider access of High BC 7 mm bullets available to you than 270 ones. This is of course especially of use if you have Access to reloading.

But yeah, between the 6.5 PRC and 270, I'd go 6.5 PRC. That is IF the rifle won't cost you a lot extra vs the 270 and that you're happy with your ability to get the needed PRC ammo

With good technique, proper equipment and enough distance between shooter and target, yes.

Yes, I shot a roe yesterday at 100 ish metres with my 7mm Rem Mag, scope on 12 x and took a high neck shot, saw the head whip back and the deer drop. I probably see 8 out of 10 shots strike.
