Out of Africa...

When we were there last (2012) we were given a briefing on what to do if attacked by poachers.

They were streaming in from Tanzania and the previous month had fired on a "photography safari' group from our sister camp.

I think things have warmed up since then.

Just such a beautiful place and where we were, if was ethical and sustainable hunting - as it should be.

I cannot be the only old git on here, who feels himself born 100 years too late...
Practice your"Good Shot RELOAD!"

Maybe by that time, you'll have won the SD supporters draw and you'll be able to take your shiny new sticks from Limulus or even use all your fancy gear from Spud?!
On a different note and if you're bored, may I suggest reading "The Fortunes of Africa" by Martin Meredith..... a perfect illustration of why politics in Africa will always be....err... challenging. If/when you do go out there, I hope you can still find a way of bringing back an odd "memory" of a great time (obviously not a "trophy" lest people get upset!).

It's like your reading my DNA...🤑
When I went to Namibia I was on a fairly tight budget, totally self inflicted, and I regretted it. I’m not talking about the big 5 or the really expensive antelopes, but I should have been a bit more generous to myself, zebra, kudu hartebeast and impala would have been nice options.

Well now.

Our little "Gang of Four" have had deposits laid out since 2019 for a return trip to Mozambique. Then the world came off its bearings.

It is (I have just checked) now 2022. Couple of things have happened.

Pandemic (you know the details).

Armed insurrection (bordering on civil war) in the north of the county (our rough destination).

An email from the PH this morning. Things are starting to move again, how does November this year sound?

Well what say you dear reader?

Would you go?:-|

I will have a whip around if you promise to stay ! Seriously go for it there are no dress rehersals and you don't know what is around the corner

Are you flying into Tete?

Most of the flights I’ve found are so roundabout with multiple stops that I would feel like Phileous Fogg
We had all our flights booked in 2019 - one of our team did a sterling job in getting all our refunds.

It is (pun) all up in the air at the moment. Another of our group is in coms. with the PH to try and come with a plan, but I suspect it will not be simple.

I am tempted to not even take my own rifle this time because that just adds a buggeration faction of x10 to every trip.

I wish one could just go into hibernation and wake in the camp.

On one of the internal flights last time (I was sat behind the pilot) my mate starts shouting that the fuselage door had opened.

I looked, and indeed it had.

I drew the pilots attention to the fact and asked him to 'fly straight and level', whilst another mate pulled it closed and locked it - whilst I held him by his belt.

Only in Africa...

Two of our four will be after Buffalo and the like, me and the fourth are only on Plains Game.

All of us have perviously brought "stuff" back. It is protracted, expensive and a Royal pain in the arse - but I am glad I did it.

This time, Mrs S62 has asked that I confine myself to 'photographs' only - which is of course entirely sensible.:-|

I am the last man anyone should take financial advice from.

I am not a wealthy man and for me, everything is 'expensive' - the problem is that this stuff is priceless and my Man Cave (now that the memory of the costs involved have faded) is a constant source of pleasure to me.

One of our party (very experienced Hunter) has a "Man Room" that is like something out of the Smithsonian.

I got to tag along with a much more financially secure bunch, so I got to go on a lion hunt. It was a dream come true, especially when one of the local farmers invited me along to search for a lion he’d shot that had run into the bush.
It was dead, but I didn’t know that and he didn’t know that when he asked me to come along..

Ditto. Forgive the re-post but you may not have read it.

One of our group managed to take a very old and poorly Lion.

On a hunt for dangerous game. My mate was gun, second mate was on the camera and I was "rear gunner".
Long short.

My mate is successful in taking an old Lion - which was also carrying the remnants of a poacher's snare in a badly damage foot.

The crew are busy with the post shot administration when we see that there is a lioness further up the mountain and she is not going away.
I am dispatched to go and stand between our party and her as "security". My mate's tracker passes me his double (spare rifle) and I wander off to perform my duty.
The lioness is watching intently and shows no desire to leave. As we start to loose light I am transfixed by her eyes - but secure in the knowledge that if needed, I have the upper hand.

Eventually, the work is done and we are ready to load up and head back to camp. I break open the double to pass it back to the tracker.

"Would you look at that, not loaded".

After taking his shot with his rifle; the double had been unloaded and in the excitement not reloaded when passed to me for my "security detail". I had neglected to check it was loaded.

Well - you could have knocked me down with a lioness. Literally.

I would go.

In fact I am hoping to go, but admittedly probably to Zim this year for buff - so there isn't the adder terror threat in the North of Moz.

Best of luck, very jealous

Get out there and lets just hope the list of stuff we cant bring back isnt EVERYTHING in Africa for the sake of the others in the group. Im off to SA in APR god willing and if a ban is implemented it will be cull animals so even more animals will end up on the dinner table of the locals but the antis dont see it that way

What flights have you found @Stalker1962 ?

Our usual route has been SAA to Joberg then connect on Airlink to Pemba. Stay over with some friends then Charter to bush strip then a final 4 hours in cruiser to camp

This year our problem is

No SAA flights to Joberg
Virgin and BA get in too late to make the Pemba Airlink connection - I refuse to fly LAM after they nearly lost our rifles on one trip
We also used to check the rifles right through to Pemba

So problem now is
1. We may have to overnight in Joberg and check the rifles in and out more bu99eration and cost even using Air2000 for advance documentation and we still won't get to camp that day as the Airlink flight lands too late to get a charter same day
2. Alternatively we might just make the Maputo flight, but would have to overnight their, get a Pemba flight next day and hope it lands early enough to still get the charter day 2
3. Get a charter from Maputo up to the bush strip same day £££££££££

Either way its more ££, time and we will have to check in to SAP etc

Haven't looked at Tete option but its a long way south west of the hunting block compared to Pemba

All in all I think the 2 long days each way in and out might just becoming 3 days ZZZZ

Any bright ideas?

S
