Boar - Mauser 8mm

Being of a certain age I invariably get itches that simply will not go away. My latest is the desire to shoot boar with my M48 8x57 Mauser which currently is on my FAC for range only. I already have a .308 and 6.5x55SE for deer and goat (and now fox - a very recent development in NI) and was wondering if my request would be knocked back on the basis of my already having these? I imagine that on the mainland boar-specific rifles are not a problem but over here (where there are no boar) the authorities are less “sympathetically-minded”! The other issue is that some of my boar shooting will be in France where I believe some “military calibres” are prohibited - will this include the Mauser?
Sooo any advice would be very welcome chaps.

Can't be certain but I think the ban on military cartridges was lifted some time ago. A search on SD might clarify?

Thought I would do it whilst I had the magic lantern in my hand and voila! Indeed you are correct - pretty much everything is ok except those nasty kalashnikovs and other assault rifle thingies. Good start!

Why can't you get the 8x57 as a deer/ boar rifle ? It's said the 8x57 is in the same category as the 30-06. I love my 8x57jrs for driven boar shooting. A great calibre for the job.

Indeed my aspiration but over here more than one rifle for deer is not that common, two is unusual and three……
Remember too that deer are pretty few and far between compared to GB and Europe and there are no boar so “good reason” can be a challenge…..

You've already satisfied good reason for ownership with target shooting so unless things are totally different in N.I. it shouldn't be too difficult to get your condition varied to also include deer and boar.
Excellent cartridge for boar by the way even if you are talking about the rimless round and not the "real" boar cartridge that jagare is talking about.

P.S. The military cartridge ban in France was in the main lifted some years ago so shouldn't affect you.

A friend of mine in the Province recently got had an 8x68 added to his certificate. Admittedly he was able to produce evidence of having booked a trip.

Thank you 8. There is an extremely wide gulf in the minds of licensing people here between Range and Open Certificates! Most recent example is only last month it became legal to shoot a fox with your deer/goat rifle but only on ground where you have deer permission! Prior to that your fox chambering was limited to 22-250 and presumably still is where you do not have deer - go figure!

France is now much more permissive of military calibres (law changed end of 2013).

8x57 is a good boar cartridge.

I used to hate 8x57 when I was running it through a 1937 dated K98k
Very snappy & not too pleasant

THEN I managed to find a 1915 dated Gew 98
It's like it's using a totally different cartridge. I can fire it all day & it just makes you grin!!
PPU factory actually shoots really really well in it. The last reloads were a but too much poke though - decided to use some Nobel Rifle 1 - and instead of my normal mild or mid-range charge I was closer to the max. Still fun, and still very accurate, but a noticeable kick on firing.
Nothing better though than a sunny day at Catterick with the Gew98, a couple of Finn M91's and a Swede M96....they get a lot of use post-lunchbreak once the fair-weather/early-bird crowd have vanished.
Been doing a lot of loads for all three using pistol powder & lead bullets/plated bullets. Makes for cheap fun & a lot less wear & tear on the old guns & the getting old shooter

No Calibre restrictions now in France. 8x57 is a very popular all round boar calibre, but so to is the 308 with a heavier bullet, or now in many areas a non toxic bullet. If you shooting driven boar, then you do want a rifle that handles well and you need to be able moving targets, but not any great range. Open sights are still used by many, so to are red dots, and low powered scopes. Or you will be shooting from high seats. Open sights are fine during the daytime, but you might want a "moonsight" or a scope under the moon.

And being in Northern Ireland, just use your EFP, drive down to Cork and jump on the ferry direct to France with no bollocks of palaver like we have.

I'd be tempted to drop an Aimpoint on it

One of the surprising things that jumped out as "different" when I started attending the gun auctions in Sweden was the number of very VERY expensive double rifles and combination guns, all top end quality with the best wood you've seen & hand engraving, which had an Aimpoint red dot on them.
Obviously they'd had use in driven game in close range forest environments....a case of sod the aesthetics, get them bowled over!!
Also explains why such a firm as Aimpoint originated in Sweden in the first place....

Only used mine in a bowling pin shoot at the local club. Having used iron sights & standard scopes for decades I was surprised how much faster the red dot was to pick up by comparison...
