30-06 or 308 or Creedmoor

This is just a general discussion what would fellow members pick if they could chose the above or a different calibre all together?

308 for stalking without a doubt. There is little to no benefit going for 30-06 over 308 unless you go to a 26” barrel. I say that having previously had a 26” 30-06 and 2 x 308 now.

Having said that, I do love my 6 creed as a target and fox/deer rifle. Im not that keen on 308 for foxing

For a do it all the .308 takes a bit of beating.

If you’re mainly on large deer on open ground I would look .300 Win Mag/WSM/NM

For small deer 6.5x55.

The .30-06 to me is a relatively outdated cartridge which falls into the middle ground where you’d be better jumping to the Magnums if you need the performance or just shooting a .308 if you don’t.

That said all will do the job if put in the right place so if you find a rifle you like just go with it.

Use it for everything in the uk and either factory or homeload haven’t decided yet

I think that’s a key decision for you to make. If you are not going to reload I would go for .308 as there’s much more choice in factory loads. If you are definitely going to reload then go for 30-06 as it gives you a very wide selection of bullet weights to chose from 110grn up to 200grn. Giving you not only the ability to develop loads for all UK quarry but also for African plains game and European Boar should the idea of overseas trips take your fancy. While the 6.5 CM is an interesting calibre which has generated a lot of interest in recent years, it’s more of a long range calibre, more at home in the western states of the US than UK woodland stalking. If you have your heart set on a 6.5 I’d go for a 6.5x55.

Out of interest, what bullets have you used for fox and deer in the 6 creedmoor?

in short if your shooting up to about 160 grains you wont gain any advantage with an ought six over 308 win . indeed you just put more powder in for nothing
Creed v 308 ? lighter longer 6.5 mm bullets give less recoil and actually arrive on target faster for like weights as they retain speed better as distance increases and they drift less in the wind ( all about the high BC) however some places ask for larger bullets on boar which the 308 might be worthwhile . Two equal shooters one on 308 and one on creed in practical or tactical comp ? creed should win every time

One other thing I forgot to mention in favour of the .308 is it’s a very forgiving calibre in the shorter barrel. It will perform perfectly well out of a 20inch barrel so perfect with a moderator for woodland stalking or from a high seat. Both the 6.5CM and 30-06 get better results from longer barrels 24 inch for both of them.
