What wouldn’t you shoot?

Have shot a right and left at "Timberdicks" in my youth but haven't raised a gun to one in 50+ years. Hate shooting hares, may have to reduce them this year, hopefully my young chap will hornetize them, no shotgun. Badgers need a solid cull would be quite happy to do that, they are exploding everywhere.

It's all subjective .....I wouldnt travel to Africa to shoot an elephant or lion but if I lived there and they were killing people or raiding crops then no problem.

Nothing I wouldnt shoot in the UK...we need to keep shooting alive as its already being eroded from all sides.

As a farmer I feel pulled more & more towards conservation, rather than money making & business. I feel it is my duty to help the little creatures that struggle in modern times. I planted hedges & trees, provide nesting sites & boxes, leave unsprayed ares for skylarks & partridges, made riffles & eddies in the stream for the trout (which I reintroduced) manage my water meadows, the last in the area for barn owls etc. I am surrounded by larger farmers with a different attitude, as a result of increased wildlife the down side is that the area also becomes a magnet for predators. Without predator control the 3 legged stool of conservation falls down. I haven't done this just to feed foxes. its a conundrum, that is impossible to appease all the interested parties. To give you one example, 3 years ago, I opened the bedroom window & saw a large very beautiful green Woodpecker on the wall, very lizard like with a long tongue, head moving from side to side as if listening for something. When I came in at lunchtime, every single House Martin nest on the south side of the house had been smashed open, egg nest & chick remains on the ground. The next day he turned up on the North Side. End of story. You can add your own ending.

Quite a few years ago I was talking with a man who had shot a few monkeys (unsure which species) he told the tale of the monkeys holding their hands over the bullet wound, I suppose like humans would. He said he could never do it again.
I’ve heard the same tale, possibly from the same source.

Compassion is the mark of the true hunter. Choosing not to shoot, whether that be a particular species or individuals within a species, is what sets the hunter apart from the person who simply kills things because it's legal and because they can.

Yes.

I would never intentionally orphan young, so feral pigs with distended teats are off the list. Ditto vixens where that state is obvious. [night shoots make lactation status tricky to identify]

I have no desire to shoot elephant, or big cats, or giraffe. And will never shoot anything barred by law.

For the rest, if the quarry can be lardered, I am probably up for it.
